and has since apologized, saying he did not realize the term's deeply hurtful meaning.

I doubt he gets the Meyers Leonard treatment.

I think asian term originally started during Korean War where locals and kids would call American troops “miguk” which meant American country/you American and the troops took it as “me asian” so the term was born. And I guess it got carried over during Vietnam war.

I recall being called this a few times in middle school. Didn’t bother me too much. It’s kind of a weak insult.

I learned the term while watching a replay of a 1970s TV movie while on Spring Break in 1998. Some Vietnamese immigrant girl was having a tough time at a mostly white high school in California. Called my Asian friends that word for a week thereafter. I’m canceled.
