Browns eyeing new $1B stadium

NEOtrans real estate blogger Ken Prendergast reported the news in a post Friday, writing that unnamed sources close to team owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam told him they want a covered stadium that could cost over $1 billion and are even open to moving the city-owned stadium to a new location near downtown to get it. And so far, the Browns have not denied it.
quote:
Reached by phone Sunday, John-Baptiste declined to respond to the blog post but confirmed that the team is conducting “feasibility studies on what a new stadium could look like.” The results are expected sometime in 2023 and focus “primarily on renovating the current stadium,” he said, but he could not definitively refute whether plans might eventually include rebuilding or moving the arena.
quote:
He could not say how much an upgraded facility might cost, but it’s likely to require significant public funding, considering most professional teams negotiate subsidies from their home city and county. The current stadium, which was built in 1999, cost $283 million, largely funded by city bonds backed by the county’s “sin tax” on alcohol and cigarette purchases.
Bend over taxpayers - we've all seen how this plays out.

Nope. A $300 million building does not have a 20 year life span. frick these teams that fleece the taxpayers for a stadium and then want a new one 20 years later.
Looking at you
Braves
Rangers
Falcons
Diamondbacks (Still in Chase Field but they want a new park)

Okay I know that technically it's possible .....
But why?

They don’t need new stadium

It's the fricking Browns, they'd probably spend a billion and not play in it due to it being unsafe. Then, the team would move to another city.

A new $1B+ stadium to play 8 regular season Cleveland home games is crazy.

Never understood taxpayers funding stadiums. You’re a multi billion dollar sports franchise. Borrow money and build it yourself

The stadium they have now is completely fine in every way. It fits right in as a NFL stadium even today. I have been there.
This is ridiculous
Just more fleecing taxpayers and shady construction deals for all kinds of unecessary nonsense

Baker has been tending to the stadium night and day based on all of the Progressive commercials.

The city of Atlanta didn’t foot the bill since it was originally built for the Olympics and NBC/Olympic sponsers paid for the construction iirc. And Ted Turner paid for renovation afterwards to make it a baseball stadium.
Getting out of Turner and heading north to Cobb County was the smartest thing the Braves could’ve done. The area around Turner was a shithole and very unsafe, which impacted attendance big time in later years. Truist Park and the Battery is a night and day different experience and considering the Braves are currently #3 in attendance, I think it reflects that

Isn't the current stadium near downtown? I'm not super familiar with Cleveland but it's not out in the burbs.

Tell that to all the Supersonic fans. Seattle played chicken with ownership and lost big time.

There are others who bailed on stadiums after 30-40 years. Twenty-five years is especially egregious, though.

Seattle never had a chance. Bennett was moving the team to OKC no matter what.

Key Arena was a dumpster and the city fathers refused to spend a dime. The NBA commissioner and Adam Silver his sidekick at the time were begging officials to commit to a new stadium.
Since the exodus, they invested over a billion dollars into a complete renovation. One of the nicest WNBA stadiums in America.
