I wanted to throw some darts with a small group of people but I hate the plastic tip ones found at most bars. I searched a couple of places I used to go a long time ago but they are closed down. Any suggestions? TIA

Most all darts are metal, it's the points that differentiate "Steel Tip" with metal points from "Soft Tip" with plastic points.

Too bad you're not in the N.O. area. I could give you a couple dozen selections to choose from------all steel tip.

Hardly. He's asking about bars that have real, sisal dartboards like you see on the Pro tour, especially in England and other parts of Europe.

They have been having boards that use soft-tip darts, meaning the points are a relatively hard plastic and the boards used for them are also made of some sort of plastic with thousands of points facing outward from the surface of the board to "catch" the incoming darts.

Main differences between those boards is steel tip requires you to keep your own score as the game progresses and the trebles and doubles are smaller than on the soft-tip version.

Soft-tip boards are almost always coin-op boards that bring in revenue to the bars, much like the coin-op pool tables used in many pool leagues. As mentioned, the double, treble and bullseye area are slightly larger for easier scoring. Also, a dart can hit a scoring area and the score counts even if the dart falls out since the machine does all the scoring electronically and that is a huge help for the math challenged players out there.

In steel tip darts, if a dart falls out the board, it doesn't count for score. The point has to be in, or touching a scoring area to count for points.

Use to. I still play a couple times a week between the man cave and local watering holes against league players but no longer play in the local league.

However, at one time I was playing at least 3-4 times a week in league play and then in Blind Draw Money Tournaments on Friday nights and weekends.

The internet has made following the worldwide competition a snap and I do follow all the major tournaments that are streamed out of Europe, Asia and Australia.

At one time, England dominated the sport, but now it is filled with folks from all over the world in the upper Order of Merit.
