Bernard Hopkins wants Mayweather at 160 on May 3

I don't see the Mayweather camp taking this offer but I'm wondering if the Showtime executives are pushing hard for this one. They're the ones who gave Floyd the $200m contract and they're the ones who said they have to offer Floyd more money per fight to keep him coming back.
I mean, who does Floyd fight now? Danny Garcia? No one wants to see that nor is it even competitive. Amir Khan? Yeah that would succeed in a major way in the UK...but there's a good chance Khan gets KTFO or loses a wide decision to Devon Alexander in December.
The only way Showtime can build a BIG event for Floyd's 3rd fight is to make him move up in weight. Sergio Martinez would be an interesting option although they'd probably make him drop to 154. There's the Gennady Golovkin rumor but he doesn't have the name recognition to draw the Money Team into a fight.
That's why I think Showtime is the one behind this Hopkins-Mayweather thing. If this fight gets made, it's because Showtime forced it to happen. But it's gonna take one hell of an offer for Al Haymon to tell Floyd to sign up for this.

What does Mayweather prove by fighting Hopkins? That he can beat a bigger guy who is well past his prime?

I"d take Danny Garcia over Amir Khan. Amir Khan has no business being in the ring with Floyd.

the trash talking alone and the fact that Hopkins would be 49 would be a big selling point. Mayweather would be the child in this fight.
Like I said, I see the point to it and that's why I think Showtime is the one behind it all. But I don't see Mayweather taking this fight unless they're certain that Hopkins making 160 would destroy him. He's gonna be 49 and dropping 15lbs is no small task....but like Floyd, B-Hop takes super care of himself.
It's interesting to say the least but I don't see it taking place.

It's basically a fight with two legendary names. One would be 37 and the other would be 49.
B-Hop just wants a HUGE check before retiring.

In 2010-2011 Mayweather-Martinez at 154 was the BEST fight that could have been made in boxing. It was a fight that (at the time) could have given Floyd his first loss. Martinez was very dangerous back then. Sure, it wasn't the draw Mayweather-Pacquiao would have been but it would have been a much more competitive fight.
But now, Martinez isn't half the fighter he was even two years ago. His legs are gone and his reflexes aren't far from it either. I also don't think he can make 154 as he's adjusted to 160 after being there for 4 years now plus being 38.
I don't really see it happening unless Martinez looks better in his comeback fight next March/April but if he does, no way Floyd goes to 160. What's messed up is even if Floyd did jump to 160 he'd still crush Sergio.

Money might not knock him out, but he'd score on him easily and would win an easy decision.

Floyd choose from a number of options;
1) Knock him out early.
2) Fight conservative and completely outclass him until about round 8, and then knock him out.
3) Cruelly decide to not knock him out but to merely dominate every money and give Khan a beating like he's never before received.

This is what is so depressing about the sport, there is no one left for Money to fight and possibly take his place as the sports' face when he steps down.
Hell, Pacquiao is on a 2 match losing streak including a KO to Marquez.
At this point, I think Money takes on the winner of Bradley/Marquez.
