Baseball showcase question
Posted by theenemy on 5/24/19 at 10:27 am19
My son will be a freshman in HS next year and is interested in playing college ball....when does he need to start going to showcases?
We have started getting email flyers for camps and showcases.
Of course the flyers claim it is important to start now.
Also, he plays for a small Class B HS if that matters.

Get personally invited before attending any. It's a money pit. They only look at certain people once the showcases start.

Do camps rather than showcases.

frick paying for showcases.
Put his videos on twitter and tag Flatground and he'll be seen by more scouts/recruiters than can ever show up at a showcase. And it's free.

That's what we were looking for but seems like most of the camps are for younger players rather than highschoolers.

I can probably answer any questions you have about the whole process. And one of my best friends is a HS baseball writer/scout. He goes to many of these things and would definitely know if they’d be worth your time and money or not.
Email me anything you want to know more about or if you have any questions.

That's pretty cool. I guess I'll have to start videoing him...lol.

This! I recently started coaching my high school's prep teams as a side job for extra cash. I dictate what the player dues are, which includes compensation for my time, and to be quite honest I could charge damn near whatever I wanted and most of the parents would pay it. While the extra cash is nice I'm not one to take advantage of the system, but some of these "travel clubs" are solely dependent upon $$$ so those coaches will charge SOOO much money that parents will pay just so Johnny and Brayden can play together over the summer while potentially getting scouted.
I played college ball and I can tell you that a lot of these college coaches/scouts go see players that they're referred to by other coaches. Yes they attend some of the camps because it's just another source of players to check out, but at the end of the day as long as your kid is a top performer, word will get out and he will be seen by the right coaches/schools.
Subtle brag...I played with Anthony Rendon for 2 seasons of summer ball (sophomore and junior summers of HS). Pretty sure those were the only 2 years of select/travel ball he ever played. Dude is making milli's on the Nationals now.
Don't sacrifice quality practice and experience for the flashy money pit travel ball that promises championship rings for friggin 12 year olds. No one gives a shite.

You need to look at getting him on a summer team that will play in some showcase events. the knights organanzation is probably the best, Marucci has some solid teams as well but there are plenty of good ones out there. Do your homework and ensure it’s not a money grab
Ok.
His HS team plays in a summer league against other HS and we are looking for a fall ball league for this fall.
We just didn't know how important showcases were for recruiting.
Honestly, I'm hoping he will get TOPS scholly and just be able to walkon where he goes to college.

I was a preferred walk on my freshman year and earned a scholarship after that year. When the time comes your kid gets scouted and calls roll in from college coaches, you should talk to him about what he wants from the game. I don't mean to dictate where he goes, but say he gets an offer from UT and also Texas State. Yeah playing at UT sounds awesome, but what if he's just going to ride the bench for a year or two and MAYBE become a starter. But at Texas State he's an immediate starter and gets to play every day for 4 years. Nobody has a crystal ball to see the future but it's something to think about.
Either way, there is nothing like playing college sports. Makes some of the best years of your life 10x better! Not to mention it makes commingling with the ladies much easier

Tell him just to focus on one thing at a time, like making the varsity as a freshman
If he’s as good as you think he is his name will get out. You have plenty of time

Great advice here. If he has talent, you can’t hide him no matter what you do.
What position is his best spot? I played in college and at the pro level and coached in college for a bit. I can give you some perspective, especially depending on position

He needs to join a showcase team...not individual showcases. He’ll have to try out for and make a team

Middle infielder. He started for the varsity team last year at shortstop. He has a good glove and is really quick. Pretty quick on the base paths and aggressive running.
Struggled a little hitting last year but I think alot of that was adjusting to high school pitchers and his age. We are working this summer hitting from the left side of the plate.

Ok...we just didnt want to miss something that we needed to be doing to give him the opportunities he needs.
So, things have changed since I played some as travel ball wasn’t a shot big. My best advice as a middle infielder, though, is make sure you do everything you can to help his 60 time and arms strength.
The first thing they do at showcases and camps are run a 60 and throw from the outfield or deep short. Right then, all but about 5-10 kids are struck off the list from a sec type school.
I coached at a D2 an for saw a ton of kids that’s had great hands and actions because they had played baseball year round since they were 8, but they couldn’t run and just weren’t athletic enough to play for us.
I’m not saying don’t join travel ball or whatever, but if he isn’t athletic enough he won’t Be able to play a ton certain levels. I would think about one of those places that trains you to move quicker, and long toss in the off-season to build arm strength.
