And it was only a 2 and a 1/2 hour game. That would be the 7th inning stretch in today's game.

Against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

And the Yankees won 2-1.

That's still a record for the longest complete game.

What is wrong with modern baseball, that they have to spit 10X, play with their balls and get out of the batters box for golf practice swings after every pitch?

Forget the obsession with the DH. Make it a rule you have to stay in the batters box and be ready for the next pitch. You can't saunter out and spit incessently, wave to your mistress, bang your bat on the ground and call time on every pitch.

Evolution of the length of games:

1915/19 1:56

1975/79 2:41

1985/89 3:05

1995/99 3:18

2005/09 3:31

2015/19 3:34

Games are an HOUR and a HALF longer then when Ruth played.

This is still baseball, right?

1 hour and a half longer. A fricking hour and a half. For the same 9 innings.

The SAME 9 innings.

Glad you got to see that in person and not read about. I know you complain about us young guys talking about your hero’s from the 40s. I could only imagine.

It was understood back then that once you stepped into the box, you had to stay in the box.

And be ready at any moment if a pitcher would rapid fire.

Not this Bryce Harper step out of the box shite after every pitch and take golf swings.

You had your golf swings, on the On-Deck circle, you had plenty of them. And you're still not ready to hit?

The game is too loose, way too much liberty that guys yesterday would never have gotten away with.

I mean players walk away from being in the batters box about 5 yards and flex their bat and then look around to the crowd...while everyone is waiting.

There should be a rule that you're called out...if you stray farther than a yard from the batters box.

Not sure about that.
Baseball has breaks between inning and pitching changes, but baseball does not wait on the commercials.
Football and basketball has designated commercial breaks.

I think the game has become longer because of the dragging of batters and pitchers that take their time.
Also, as per the OP post, the fact that there are so many pitching changes, the games take longer. How many times do we know see a pitcher come in for one batter? That never happened in the early days of the game.

Baseball is killing itself concerning this. I'm not saying it would help viewership a ton, but for a game that's naturally slower than other sports, they should be trying to speed things up, not slow them down.

Yea but they drop more dingers nowadays so don’t care. Chicks dog the long ball bas.

Baseball is the greatest game in this country and people complain about the length.

I like the ones who have to unstrap all of their support straps and restrap them before every pitch.

It's not going to effect TV ratings at all. People either like watching the sport or they don't. I mean NFL games last just as long as MLB games and have even more delays with endless commercials, replays, and players standing around waiting for the next play to start and it hasn't affected the viewership of the sport one bit. Reducing the average duration of baseball games by 30 minutes won't have people tuning in to the watch the sport again.

yes and no.

The whole routine of a pitch has become so dragged out. In between pitches, the batter has to adjust something, then time is called, then the batter has to adjust something, then the catcher has to come talk to the pitcher. Then, the manager comes out to swap pitchers all the time.

If you watch footage of an old game, time between pitches were essentially non-existent.

You can sell a lot more shite in 3 hours than you can in 2. Bottom line.

- commercials
- pitching changes
- players adjusting after every pitch
- stadiums pausing the action for giveaways

He was the best left handed pitcher in baseball or close to it when he went to the outfield.

He also played baseball almost everyday. Before being a pro, he would play over 200 games a year. Most in adult leagues when he was a teen. Dude was an animal.

There an argument here that if you could speed up the pace of an actual inning then you could take longer breaks between innings...you know when tv and radio commercials actually air.
