Are the Dallas Mavs the most disappointing team year to date?

This team that was supposed to be in store for big things, Luka an MVP candidate finds themselves courting the T'wolves for the bottom of the conference.

They are shooting the worst 3pt fg % in the league, yet havent slowed down their attempts, nor do they work the ball around 27th in Ast/Fg made, for a better shot attempt.

They are undisciplined committing a high rate of fouls (and the always costly technical foul)

Intangibles like rebounding that are more about hustle and effort than anything has mirrored the 9-14 record

Bad losses against Charlotte, Chicago x2

Luka in spite of his efforts ranks a pedestrian 26th in offensive win shares. snugged between john collins and montrezl harrell

is it time for Dallas to blow up the roster and start aquiring draft picks?

Atlanta has been sort of average. Thought they would have a better record.

The Heat have had their best player out though.

Silas was the brains behind that operation.

I think the Mavs have a good claim to that. They’ve got a legitimate top 5 player in the league, and Porzingis who should be perennially All-NBA caliber yet they aren’t competitive in some games (like last night).
They have horrible ball movement and it’s like every role player just wants to catch and shoot immediately and has not interest in moving the ball around.

The Pelicans are up there too. Zion is becoming unstoppable, BI is a legitimate elite scorer, but they can’t win. There issue is more about roster construction. If they play their best 5 players they have no spacing as only 1 of those guys is really a big threat to shoot. I love Steven Adams and I liked the idea of he and Zion working together but it doesn’t seem to be happening, they just get in each other’s way.

They need to trade some of their slashing guards for some shooters

To a degree but they also lost about half the team, most being heavy rotational players, for 3 weeks due to a COVID outbreak.

Josh Richardson trade has not worked out.

We also elected to go with Dwight Powell instead of going after Julius Randle.

KP doesn’t play every game and needs to.

We have been bad. They need to turn it around.

It’s really surprising, OP. I expected them to make a nice jump this year and Luka to really assert himself as a bonafide top 5 player in the association.

They really need to get him a better running mate because Porzingis is simply not that dude

That’s “the first place Charlotte Hornets” to you.

And I don’t think I would say that a loss to Charlotte is “bad”. at least not anywhere near as bad as a loss to them was previously.

As a Mavs fan, I've said the Mavs roster is not that good, and I've said for the last 2 years that they won't be winning anything of significance until they go out and get a 3rd big name player...most notably, a SG or SF capable of scoring and playing decent defense.

Luka - his shooting has been horrific, shooting below 50% from the field and just awful from 3 all year. He's scoring in the high 20s every game, but taking 25 shots to do it, plus usually has lots of FT attempts. Defense isn't anything special.

Porzingas - has missed most of the games this season. Since coming back, he's giving them some offense from that position that was sorely missed. He's not a dominating guy that teams are scared of though. He needs to be the 3rd option.

Hardaway Jr - has potential to catch fire and score 30, or go 0-30 on any given night. Gives you basically nothing as far as rebounds, assists, etc.

Richardson - Same as Hardaway. Volume shooter who can be hot or cold, never know what you're going to get. Even less help as a rebounder and no better assist wise than Hardaway.

Finney Smith - An absolute waste on the offensive end. Cannot score unless he's gifted a wide open shot or layup. No help on rebounding.

Kleber - has missed some games, but he's just not effective. Not good defensively, and he's a stretch 4 that doesn't shoot particularly well.

Brunson - has been a surprisingly effective scorer at times off the bench, but a backup PG is all he will be.

Powell - missed lots of games. Doesn't score or defend particularly well and averages less than 4 rebounds per game as a C.

Cauley Stein - I've seen him be effective, but he seems to be in foul trouble every game I watch. Can't stay on court long enough.

Boban - gives you good minutes for a 3rd string center who cannot move at all. If he had the athleticism to get up and down the court and could play defense, he could be a dang good player. Very skilled offensively.

Burke
Johnson
Iwundu
Green

None of those guys are even worth mentioning.

The ONLY player on the roster capable of creating offense for himself and others is Luka. The next 4 offensive threats, other than Porzingas, aren't good enough or consistent enough to rely on. Dallas needs another main guy...DeRozan, Butler, Oladipo, Beal...but don't know how much they'd have to get rid of to obtain any of those. Not that any of our players should be off limits, because I don't think we have any that are untouchable outside of Doncic and Porzingas.

The Mavs have had a TON of players miss games for various reasons including COVID.

I think they will get it together and make the playoffs.

Luka stayed the same and the rest of the roster got worse. Plus they have covid issues. They'll turn it around a bit but there is a real chance they miss the playoffs if the Warriors, Spurs, Grizz keep it up. That would leave one play-in spot for Dallas to battle for

Strictly due to injuries and covid I dont think it's fair yet to put them as the biggest disappointment.. Maybe in a few weeks. Everyone knew it would be a rough start getting KP reoriented and that was before the injuries and covid. With a guy like Doncic you never blow it up until he demands out. Maybe the heat, pelicans, or kings..

I would certainly concur with Tigerbait1977. The Mavs, along with the Pelicans, Heat and Raptors have all underachieved.

The individual fanbases of those teams probably each think their team is the most disappointing.

As a fan of the Mavs, I believe they are the most disappointing. A team supposed to perhaps even do better than it did in 2019-20 is instead going steadily downhill. And the outlook doesn't look promising for any improvement.

Luka is almost averaging a triple double. He isn’t the issue. Porzingis needs to step up

As good as his potential is, he is simply not a star that can be counted on. He is too injury prone. Ultra skinny 7 footers can't stay healthy. The sooner the Mavs realize this and move on from him, the better

I agree. I do like hardaway jr but he’s not a star or anything. If the mavs don’t get Luka some help, they’ll waste his talent. He’s so damn good and young it’s crazy.
