This is my first year coaching Pee Wee and we are actually doing really well. The main problem I have is getting the little shits to block on the offensive line. I'm looking for any advice to get them to block. Any PeeWee coaches have any suggestions?

Tried that but they took out 3 of their teammates.

What are you running?

I would just run zones and have them count to 4 once they hit a guy. Make it simple and stupid and something they can remember.

We line 'em up and make them knock the shite out of each other... let's them know that they won't die. Once a kid gets knocked down enough times he'll either start hitting back or quit... either of which is fine with me.

P.S. one of my best O-linemen is a girl

Do you personally know how to block? Did you play line during the glory days?

If so, you're not teaching them well enough.

If not, get help.

Keys to Pee-Wee are having a defense that likes to punish other kids and having an offensive line that can open holes. All decent Pee-Wee teams have kids in the backfield that are good athletes. Good/great Pee-Wee football teams have kids that like to pancake block.

You have to motivate enough to make the defense and offensive line want to run through a wall for you.

Make it fun. Circle the kids up at practice for 10 minutes a day and have them face off, very similar to "big cat drill".

It's fun to win, and the winner is those drills has to have good form. Match them up by weight.

If your team is big enough, split into 2-3 circles and use assistants to monitor the other groups. Anything in your entire practice that involves limited reps I'd suggest you split into smaller groups for higher reps for everyone.

They are 8 and under so I have to keep it simple. They won't hit and if they do, they tackle. I've been able to get by with my running backs blocking for each other. If I could just get the lineman to stall the defensive line even for a second, it would make a huge difference. My running backs have literally ran over our lineman multiple times. When they don't block, we have to run outside and one team is just too fast for that. We won't beat them unless we can run it up the gut.

Teach them how to cut block.

Run tight sets with tight splits. Double team whichever way you're running using tight ends and fullbacks. Cut block on the side the play isn't going so they can't run your kid down from behind.

when i played peewee like, a few years ago, we had to block and for every block we missed, we ran an extra sprint at practice. But to coach us up, we just did a Big Cat Drill it worked out well.

ETA - Did you show them how to block, like putting their hands on the sides of the chest and push?

If your kids are just undersized, then it is what it is. If they have the natural size, then you may want to evaluate things. How often do they rep at practice against kids of equal talent actually trying to beat a block? It's what they see in games it's what they should see at practice.

We do this every practice and they do well. During a live play, not so much.

No I didn't play OLine but one of the assistant coaches did. But he thinks you can run complicated schemes with this 7 and 8 year olds. He wants to have a pulling guard and all that.

And this is 8 man football and you have to have 5 on the line inside the tackle box. They also let you run the center, which is bullshite. He doesn't even have to fake snap. Just takes off and runs. Also no nose guard and can't have anybody within 2 yards of the center. I refuse to run the center sneak because that's not football to me. Only if another team does it repeatedly will I do it. But my MLB strongly discourages teams from trying that more than once.

I appreciate the advice from everyone. I'm going to use this today at practice today. I know motivation is big for this age group so I'm gonna focus on that mainly.

WTF?? I have literally never heard of this... what would be the rationale for allowing a center sneak?

I have no idea. My guess is it was for teams that couldn't move the ball at all. It is a stupid arse rule.

You know what motivates o-linemen? Food. Fat kids love food.

"Listen up, guys. If you go out there next game and block your butts off I'll buy pizza next practice."

We actually did this for our team a couple of weeks ago. Told them that if they shut out the other team on defense we'd buy them pizza. That other team didn't score a point on our defense.
