Then he's a terrible football coach.

While the government can't get in the business of establishing or mandating a religion, it also can't get in the business of preventing private citizens from professing or practicing their faiths. The key point here is when is he Coach Swinney, represntative and employee of Clemson University (a public institution)? And at what point in his conduct and everyday life Dabo Swinney, devout Christian?

Again, if he was an hourly wage employee the line of demarcation is fairly clear. As a salaried employee with no set "work hours" it becomes a little fuzzier.

When did we start basing policy on whether one person is offended?

When did people get the right not to be offended? Who decides who has the right not to be offended, and who doesn't?

I'm offended by cocksuckers assfricking each other and calling it "marriage".

I'm offended by institutionalized racism and calling it "Affirmative Action".

I'm offended by radicals entrenching themselves in academia in order to indoctrinate naive and unspuspecting minds.

What about my rights?

This isn't about "offending" players. It is about separation of Church and State, as outlined in the constitution.

Then let's simplify the topic and just agree that he has the right to practice his faith and talk about it whenever he likes.

Lots. Do you honestly think Muslims and Atheists aren't also charitable and have strong morals? Only Christianity can teach that?

Sure, as long as he isnt representing a public institution while doing so.

The "man" cannot promote while on the clock as a state employee. Handing out bibles in the lockerroom is just that. Holding outside prayer gatherings and devotionals? I have no issue there, not do I with some sort of non-denominational chaplain.

This ridiculous group would argue that it is impossible for him to not represent the public institution. They, and you it seems, act as if he is a slave to the state.

I dont think thats the case. When he goes home from work he is not representing the state. If he wanted to have bible studies in his home after work or on the weekends, he is free to do so. When he is on campus spending time with his team, and when he is recruiting for the team he certainly is though.

ETA: The University should also not have a chaplain on staff like they do at Clemson and Auburn.

I admit my comments about Tebowing were over the top, but what if Les miles decided to do a prayer service every week on TV ? Even if he never mentioned football some of you would say he represents the state at all times, so basically you would be saying that a public figure can have no public religion whatsoever

I hope everyone stops reading this thread and sits down and reads the Bible from cover to cover. Twice. It is evil. It really is a horrible book. You have to be an absolute crazy person to take it seriously.

Does his position as a state employee inhibit his first amendment rights?

I'm rooting for Old Testament god to come back. I respected him. He got fricking results. New Testament god is a pansy.

It sure can when you violate the constitution by promoting your religious beliefs as a public employee.

You're wrong.

quote:

you violate the constitution

quote:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Telling him he can't promote his religion is the only way to violate the constitution. Then again, I choose to always come down on the side of freedom.
