A whopping 88 percent of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) athletic directors want an expanded College Football Playoff when the current playoff contract ends after the 2025 regular season, according to a survey conducted by Stadium.

Of those athletic directors who favor an expanded playoff, 72 percent believe eight teams should qualify. Also, 66 percent of the ADs said the highest-ranked non-Power Five team should receive an automatic bid to an expanded playoff.

The startling playoff expansion revelation is one of a handful of key findings in Stadium’s two-week series on the state of college football. Of the 130 FBS athletic directors Stadium reached out to, 112 responded to our anonymous survey. While the specifics of how many teams and who qualifies varies somewhat between Power Five and Group of Five conference athletic directors, one thing is certain: Change is coming to the College Football Playoff.

If an eight-team playoff is adopted, who should qualify?

It’s not much of a shocker here that this question had the biggest disparity of opinion between the Power Five and non-Power Five ADs.

The top response was that the eight-team playoff should consist of the Power Five conference champions, the highest-ranked non-Power Five team and the two highest-ranked at-large teams. Overall, 66 percent of the ADs want this model with more non-Power Five ADs in favor by a 71 to 59 percent margin.

Stupid. There were 3 legit playoff teams last year.

There is always only 2-3 teams truly worthy. Although the second best SEC team each year could upset anyone most years, that doesn't mean that they deserve the opportunity to.

Whose doing the rankings? Committee or BCS-type formula? Regardless, I think this is inevitable.

Dumbass college football fans probably still want it to be 100% subjective

Talking about it on the SEC Rant if you're curious what that cesspool thinks

Not surprising that the conference that could realistically get three teams into a four team playoff aren't in favor of expansion

However pretty much every other conference in the country disagrees and will outvote them when the time comes.

It's such a waste.

There is hardly ever even a 4th team truly deserving. Why expand on that?

4 is perfect. 6 would be okay, but do not want any more than that. It becomes too many games.

I think the issue of teams losing a CCG and not getting into the playoff versus at an large team getting in by sitting on the sideline that weekend will be a big problem with 8.

People said the same thing about "undeserving teams getting in" when we expanded the playoffs to four... and then four seeds started winning the national championship.

4 is the prefect amount, you can make an argument for several "3's" that didn't make it in the BCS, the only year in the playoff a 5th team has a legit beef is 2014.

What is gonna suck when they go to 8, which they will, is when teams that lose the CCG are left out in favor of teams that don't play in it, especially when the teams that go and lose made the CCG because they beat the team sitting at home.

take this with a grain of salt. No AD wants to not be in the CFP

I've been all in on an 8 team model for years.

The three rounds fit the current bowl season perfectly without a need to extend the season. You get all 5 P5 champs. You don't disenfranchise at large or G5 teams.

Most of all, college football games between top 8 teams are fun to watch. The more, the better.
