A Closer Look: Does Pac-12 only having 2 ranked teams speak to the strength of the conf?

Think about it..... Football matchups are a zero-some game. So in conferences without many ranked teams, that means that MANY teams have beat the best teams. These teams are usually conference opponents. Beating good teams is the sign of high level of football, correct?

Is it possible conventional wisdom on this is wrong, and having too many ranked teams is actually a negative indicator on the quality of a conference? And vice versa?

The PAC-12 is shitty this year. I actually watch the games, probably unlike you.

This psychobabble was unnecessary. Watch a few games, then chime in on the quality.

Did I studder?

PAC might have 3 players drafted in the first round

All skill players.

Lineman is biggest difference in talent. PAC 12 is largely smaller bodies

I mean I get what you're saying.

It's feasible in a world that if all the Pac 12 teams were undefeated out of conference, they COULD in theory be the best 12 teams in the country and all have 6-3 or worse records in conference.

But you can't ignore their OOC results, where USC got blasted by Texas, Washington lost to an average Auburn team etc.

Here's the OOC for P12 teams so far:

Arizona - Southern Utah (W), BYU (L), Houston (L)
ASU - UTSA (W), Michigan State (W), SDSU (L)
Cal - UNC (W), BYU (W), Idaho St (W)
UCLA - Cincy (L), OU (L), Fresno (L)
CU - Colorado St (W), Nebraska (W), New Hampshire (W)
Oregon - Bowling Green (W), SJSU (W), Portland St (W)
OSU - Southern Utah (W), Ohio St (L), Nevada (L)
USC - UNLV (W), Texas (L), ND (TBD)
Stanford - SDSU (W), Cal Davis (W), ND (L)
Utah - Weber St (W), NIU (W), BYU (TBD)
Washington - North Dakota (W), BYU (W), Auburn (L)
WSU - Wyoming (W), Eastern Washington (W), SJSU (W)

They are 23-11 OOC. Take out FCS schools and it's 14-11.

Don't really know how that stacks up to other conferences but now you have a base line for comparison

ETA: 3-5 against P5 conferences + ND.

No because a lot of the reason so few of their teams are ranked is because they were awful in OOC play.

It's an entertaining conference though.

It's a sign of parity, and not much else.

The Pac-12 is ranked last among P5 conferences in out of conference games by Colley Matrix. They're 2nd to last ahead of the Big 10 in OOC winning percentage.

They're just not very good.

It's not good.

SEC is 6-2 vs P5, 26-5 vs FBS
Big 12 is 4-6 vs P5, 15-6 vs FBS
Big 10 is 7-5 vs P5, 25-14 vs FBS
ACC is 3-6 vs P5, 19-13 vs FBS
Pac 12 is 3-4 vs P5, 14-11 vs FBS

So the conferences with the most NFL talent have the best results

Shocking
