Wasn't even alive but I still tear up every time I watch the final minute of the game. Such an incredible triumph and indisputably the greatest moment in American sports history.

Modern day David vs Goliath. Not a soul gave them a chance against the Soviets....and they’re lying to you if they say otherwise.

My love for hockey kicked up a notch due to this game.

At the time the Pittsburgh Steelers were "the team" in pro football. Much like New England has been the past decade.

I remember seeing several sportscasters comparing this win to a high school football team beating the Steelers.

That Russian team could have literally competed with any NHL team. It was made up of the best hockey players in Russia. Pretty much an All-Star team.

Al Michaels and the reunited team were special guests at the VGK - Florida game last night. They were introduced before the game and Mike Eruzione participated in the honorary pregame puck drop. The team were also honored at President Trump's rally on Friday and are scheduled to be Grand Marshals at today's NASCAR race.

I may be misremembering but I believe they did play NHL teams and win pretty handily before the Olympics

In February 1979, they faced an NHL All-Star team that featured an astounding 20 future Hall of Famers in a three-game series. The Soviets won two of the matchups, including Game 3 at Madison Square Garden in a 6-0 rout.

99% of the people who remember it, forget, Team USA had to come back and beat Finland, or they don't win the GOLD. It was a round robin tourney, so technically, had they lost Russia could of won Gold. Now it's a single elimination tourney in medal round.

Best part, NO ONE knew the result, the game was played in the late morning/early afternoon and with ZERO social media, online stuff, ABC was able to keep it hush hush, and scored big numbers in the Prime time slot.

I remember it was shown on a tape delayed basis that night and Ch. 2 sports anchor Andy Leopold decided to announce the outcome at a commercial break during the actual broadcast. Folks were threatening to blow up the station. Leopold brazenly said afterward he'd do it again if he had to do it all over.

Of course all he had to do was say if you don't want to know change the channel or turn down the volume for 10 seconds.

They boat raced the NHLers in the all star game (including the US team prior to the Olympics) if I recall. If it were a seven game series, the USSR wins in 5.

From the movie Miracle on Ice. What a great pregame speech.

Former SLU Billikens hockey coach Bill Selman played a pivotal role in selecting the team

Also, both teams played an exhibition game at Madison Square Garden a week before the Olympics. The Soviets hammered the MOI team by a score of 10-3.
