Any referees or basketball experts. I know its not called much anymore, but what kind of play or situation is it really made for? Basically when does it need to be called? On the offense

It could be called 20 times a game is what I'm saying. Thankfully its not officiated that way. What would be the scenario where it has to be called? Most blatant reason to most benefit the game

If someone is just camping in the lane and not moving around.

Clogged lanes make ugly games

Officials will typically tell the player get out of the lane. If they don’t or continue to do it then they will call it.

Not only clogged lanes but it's impossible to play post defense if the offense can just sit in front of the rim and fight for position.

So do u look for the biggest dude? Or what if a 6'4 kid is playing around with the ball like pump faking a bunch with a 5'10 kid guarding him. I know it starts over when the shot goes up

I believe it starts over once you dribble, and again if you pick up your dribble.

Thank God you cleared that up. For a second there I thought you were talking about golf.

What is the textbook/obvious situation that it HAS to be called. Only tall players? What about a guard? Or if that guy on offense is 5'9 getting guarded by a 6'5 guy, etc?

It never has to be called. And usually it isn't. The only time it might be called is when an offensive player camps in the lane for about five or more seconds and they are not going anywhere. That's about it.

Thanks guys. One of our high school refs in my association, when a coach questioned a bout it being not called, made the mistake of telling him 'we don't call that anymore'. So I basically agree, without saying it out loud to a coach of course. If a coach wants to yell three seconds or start counting, he would be wasting his time. Cause it really is a bullshite call especially late in a game when it hasn't been called all game

what u wanna do is wait til the offensive player establishes position in the post, then start counting to 3, if he is still camped down there, its 3 seconds. but since u dont start counting until he establishes position, its really more like 4.5 seconds

For college and NBA officials, they only call what affects the spread in their favor.

The biggest factor is what's happening on the ball. If a shot is about to go up than the counting stops. If an offensive player stays in lane when ball is being passed around on perimeter it will be called. It will never be called on player possessing the ball in the lane trying to get a shot off.

you have a player just camping under the rim and not even making an attempt to guard an opposing player

Someone should tell NBA 2k that the "3 second rule" isn't actually supposed to be timed to exactly three seconds
