i'm sure they would love all those schools to join, but it costs money for equipment and you have to have 10 kids or so who want to play

not to mention most schools' turf fields aren't marked for lacrosse yet in LA

It's no more costly than baseball & certainly well under football.

My grandson plays for 1 of the NOLA area HS teams & has been playing since youth, along with my other 2-his brothers. Equipment pricing has come a LONG way to be more affordable. I got the 2 younger grandsons their youth equipment this year from Lax.com for $200 + S&H.
Youth Equipment Bundle for $200.

You don't need the turf fields lined for lacrosse. There's chalk spray that washes off that just line regular field paint line spray.

Simply math would tell us that if youth equipment bundle can be found for $200 each, then call is $400 for a HS sized kid.
$400 x 20 = $8000.
Some uniforms, balls, goals, & misc. equipment would be another what, $3000-$4000?

Call it $15000 all in to get a team going.
Divide that by 20 players & you get $1000 each. Players can sign up for $500 & fundraise the rest, just like most major school football teams are doing now.
You don't need to buy brand new equipment each year. So the year 2-4 costs are even lower to keep playing. All it takes is effort.

Lacrosse is not an LHSAA sport.....yet. Rather, it is governed by a mirror organization called the LHSLL (Louisana High School Lacrosse League). It would require a petition from a minimum "x" number of schools, perhaps 80 schools, to adopt the sport. As it stands, there are only about 23 teams in the whole league, which include teams from southern Miss and southern ALA that don't have enough teams to have a league of their own.

Great efforts are underway to grow the game, which include getting coaches into middle school P.E. units to introduce the game for a few weeks, which is proving to be very successful.

Because of this, players/parents entirely self-fund this sport. No school-issued gear. Players must buy their own shoulder pads ($40-80), own helmet ($150-200), protective gloves ($30-100), elbow pads ($30-80), lacrosse sticks ($45-130, depending on shaft, head , and meche/net). As kids grow up in this sport, parents have to re-purchase this gear in some form or another. Other than obvious growth changes, gloves wear out and sticks break.

And to get good at this sport, lacrosse camps have required out of state travel (cost of camp, plus travel), but that is changing now.

ETA: sorry forever, not replying to you, but to burdman

all good, G Vice. Thankful for the discussion.

We are a LONG way off from LHSAA sanctioning the sport, althought sports like Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Minnesota has seen TREMENDOUS growth & near immediate success in getting their HS lacrossse student-athletes up to all levels of college play (both instate & all over the country).

Just think of all the LA HS football talent that DOESN'T go D1 or D2 in football instead becoming multi-sport athletes in football + lacrosse then taking their abilities to the college level...Texas will stay club for antoher decade or more because so many of the guys run the lacrosse clubs so tight to their wallets, but 1 day...oh momma....not to mention how much better lacrosse makes football players in return.

You're 1000% right about LA schools needing to specifically post teaching/P.E. openings for lacrosse minded individuals to start creating interest. Lock those kids in with non-contact lacrosse early on & the HS numbers will EXPLODE.

Lacrosse companies have started reducing prices across the board as the sports continues to grow. Once states like AL, LA, TX, etc. go "all in" the numbers will drive prices down even more. Before you know it, high schools will have varsity, jv, & freshman teams all over the place. As the game grows, so too will more legitimate summer/fall tournaments in summer + fall for players to get their club experience in.

Youth Equipment Bundle for $200.

That's my favorite equipment bundle that I've ever seen. Been promoting that to my youth players & anyone else that needs to help their kids get into the game at an affordable $. Good on you for helping your grandkids out. I hope 10000s more like you get after it the same way.

Seriously-$200 for a beginner lacrosse stick, helmet, 2022 legal shoulder pads, arm pads, & gloves is beyond amazing. Hell, the higher end helmets ALONE are $280+ these days. Decent sticks can hit anywhere between $40 - $150. But, as with anything - you don't NEED the highest priced gear to be successful. Real talent will get the job done over fancy any day.

field rental, transportation... don’t think many school buses will be used until it’s an official LHSAA sport

They don't sell the cans of field spray anymore. Back in 99-01 both teams and the refs would help mark the fields. I sure miss Karl Mitchell.

if it's a public school, they can't charge a school club team a facility rental. sports facilities are for the school/students. many ADs abuse this gray area. once you push back just a little from the parish level, they shut up. You can't charge a lacrosse team nor the chess/drama/robotics clubs for use of space. there is just a scheduling request process. of course, the major athletics have priority of scheduling, but something like lacrosse using the football stadium/practice fields cannot be outright denied.

I imagine it's a different story for private schools. But a few parents who pay those high tuitions can certainly make the school admins understand the right decision to make.

school buses work the same way. just gotta reserve/request the buses & pay the driver's fee + gas. but most lacrosse teams, like baseball & other sports have player's drive themselves to save $$$ anyway.

The absolutely G.O.A.T. of LA HS lacrosse. They named the state champ trophy in his honor.

Jesuit holds off a tough Lower AL by a score of 8-5. The Bayhawks kept it close with another phenomenal performance in cage from Freshman G Capstraw who had double digit saves.

Jesuit will face the winner of Catholic vs. Byrd tomorrow from Lee Hedges.

Karl Mitchell is the Godfather of Lacrosse in Louisiana. He basically brought the sport to Shreveport/Byrd back in the early late 90s. He passed away suddenly some years back. He is greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Catholic takes down Byrd 11-5.

Catholic was PERFECT at the FO X. That's unreal in a Final 4 game.

Catholic vs. Jesuit 1pm Sunday.

Props to JR Ball for getting CHS this far for the first time. CHS, STM's serious and at times friendly in-district rival finally going all the way. Gonna cheer for CHS tomorrow, even though we no longer have skin in the game.

Hah, yes. My point was, buy a few cans and spray the field

I am very proud to have been a founding member of that first Byrd lacrosse team and am also proud to have coach a few years after that and see the game continue to grow.

George Hopkins is the HC & faculty member for the program for the last few years now. JR is still involved as an asst.

But agree - CHS finally got over that STM hump. And will likely be right back in the mix for 2022 with the roster they are returning. Now having a frosh, JV, & varsity roster on campus really helps too.

Absolutely. whatever it takes!

If you have the time, try to get back out there to keep growing the game. Red River Youth Lax needs coaches & so do the HS teams.

Jesuit playing a strong game on all sides of the ball. They've managed to figure out how to neutralize Catholic's face off man, Conger (who was perfect yesterday in the semis).
Blue Jays up 10-5 at the end of the 3rd.
