There isn't a simple answer to this.

US citizens hold a third, the federal government about a quarter....

Everybody.

Individuals, companies, retirement plans, managed portfolios, banks, pension plans, foreign individuals, foreign governments, and the US government itself.

The benefit is that it's about as risk free as you can get and still earn interest rate above a bank savings account rate.

Why doesn't the government print its own money interest free? Why give a third party the power to print money and make or break a nation? America shouldn't owe anyone anything.

American banks and citizens hold a lot of the debt. My daughter cashed in a few of her savings bonds yesterday.

Surely you’re not serious? That’s how investments work.

You need money, so I lend you the money and in return you pay it back with interest. Depending on your ability to pay it back and length of time depends on how much interest you pay (along with competitive lenders)

So America standing on its on feet debt free instead of Jewish bankers overseas owning us wouldn't be a bright idea. You're a true idiot

Why would America need loans from private banks. We've got more capital and resources than any country. We were sold out a long time ago.

The US as others have mentioned primarily owe money to...other Americans. That works in a successful economy within reason.

The issue I have is that American debt is now over 105 percent of GDP. That is too high for a non-recessionary or non-war environment in my opinion.

When a company or a person makes an income, and has a lot of debt, more of that cash has to be allocated to paying back the lendors. If they are late or do not pay back the lendors, then the latter will demand a higher rate in the future. This means that even more of future earnings will have to be allocated for paying back debt, which is less money spent on capital that can generate more equity.

Is America going to collapse because our debt is too high? No. But unlike what MMT theorists will tell you, there is, at a certain point, an inhibitor to economic growth once debt gets too high. We are past that point. Our debt level to GDP needs to get down to about 70%.

I don’t disagree. We do have a spending problem that if isn’t fixed, future generations will have to make sacrifices because of.

Why let private owned banks (the federal reserve) control our money supply? Whoever controls the money owns the nation, obviously.

My question still stands, why do we let private banks issue our money with interest tied to it? Why can't anyone answer that?

I'm trying to avoid regurgitated propaganda you're hearing on the news. I'd like to hear real insight from the smart people of the money board. I have my opinions on it and I'd like to hear yours.

The Federal Reserve is a quasi public entity. It exists, as I understand it, as a result of the Panic of 1907. Members of the federal government, including Woodrow Wilson, were in support of a mechanism by which the government had the ability to loan money to national banks at a set interest rate, so that there was less incentive for people to “run” to the banks to take out their money during periods of economic downturn.

Does America need a federal reserve system to exist? Absolutely not. A similar debate was happening between Hamilton and Jefferson during the 1790s. But at this point it’s engrained into our economic fabric so you might as well deal with it.
