Damn. Some of you are wanting to have some nice retirement lifestyles. I hit $2 million with a paid off house and I am done.

That’s kind of my goal. I’m not looking for $X million. I’m aiming for at least $150k/year in passive income on top of other savings and investments.

I’m sorry man but that’s not how it works at all. IT IS A NUMBER! Unless you have a large pension or other form of known income, retirement is all about your investments with what you HAVE.

I’m adamant about this because too many people get to 55 still thinking this way and then have an O shite moment that they didn’t save enough. You have to save and invest.

4% return before taxes is a good solid time tested number. So if you need $150,000 you need to plan on a pension or $3.5-4 mil to get that.

Well, if I retired at my age I’d need something to do, not to mention preparing for inflation. In 2040 a car will cost about $190K.

Lol. I am wondering how realistic are those numbers, are they on track to make that or is it just pipe dreams.

2 million is my number and that is in today's dollars which is something people overlook. I'm on track for that by 55.

I don’t have a number right now. $5M is a very sound figure but may be higher than what I actually require.

Compared to you guys I'm way behind. I feel like I should be worried. I'm doing something wrong.

I don't think I will ever truly retire. Not out of the need for money but I just don't think I can not have something going on even if it's just a few rental properties or something.

Nah, you just might have far lower income needs than many.

With my 4 million answer I was thinking more along the lines of what I'd want for me and the wife to be able to stop working in our early to mid 40s. Obviously the longer I work the less I'll need. I could certainly do it with less.

I struggle to understand this POV. It gets repeated very often on this board. While I don't think anyone should be lying around the house eating bonbons during a 30+ year retirement, the world is a huge and wonderful place full of new things to learn, see, & do. Many of those wonderful things aren't profitable, yet they are tremendously enjoyable (and so many aren't even expensive). Is working, working, working the only thing that gives life meaning? If so, that's a profoundly sad statement.

Needs or wants.

Based upon the numbers I quoted earlier, it allows me plenty of monthly spending money for all the little things you might see you want, and I figured 3-4 $3k vacations a year.

Now I do realize me being happy with a $3K vacation week would need to be a $13K vacation with for another person, maybe that's the difference. Like I said, these threads scare me sometimes.
I'm mid 50's and thinking about retirement at 59 and you guys scare me.

I own the business and can run it from anywhere in the world with a cell phone, laptop, and internet. I also have an abundance of free time compared to people punching a time clock. I travel and experience plenty as a result of this.

I actually haven't done much traveling this year because the previous two years were a whirlwind but next year I already have trips to Europe and Indonesia planned. That's not counting short trips I take in the states or my business trips to Mexico in which my client's office happens to be in Playa del Carmen.

That's great and I am sure there are other hobbies others enjoy but for me, I truly enjoy building and growing a business. I enjoy the challenge and the reward of it. Nothing else (as far as hobbies go) really satisfies me like that.

You can call it sad and I get that many don't understand but to each his own.
