Any sales job has drawbacks.
But it can have great benefits, especially if commissioned based.

A lot of investment banking jobs are technically sales. Those guys do pretty well.

What about pharma sales?
I was told they have cut back drastically since many doctors are unethical and cannot resist the smell of perfume and black fish-net stockings in the office.

Pharma sales was the answer 15-20 years ago.
I’m sure it’s srill lucrative, just not what it used to be from what I’ve heard.

I will answer this from the perspective of being a financial advisor and seeing all sorts of incomes.
As a whole my medical device/specifically spine and ortho make big bank but its a cutthroat line of work and you are only as good as the docs you service and they and the hospital can drop you or your product at anytime.
My oil and gas guys on the higher end make around 300-400 per year on average with an outlier or two around 750k.
Technology guys do real well on the high end(cultivating large corporations as clients) but again its very tough to crack into the big times.
I don't see any financial sales guys as clients obviously but I do know that good ones with about 10 years in the business can earn a significant amount (500+) and the great ones are well into the 1m range.
If I were to recommend a sales job to my child it would be in the financial world, private equity group, AUM group, or some sort of benefits package group. You set the tone and you determine how much time you work and ultimately how much you earn. Also no inventory costs.....

Tech sales has been very good to me, and opportunity continues to present itself 20 + years into my career. With the move to the cloud, nearly all the big players are doubling down on campus recruiting. But this all depends on where you’re located. BR isn’t exactly a hotbed but Austin, Dallas, Atlanta, etc are exploding.
There’s no secret sauce though. You just need to find a niche you enjoy & stick with it.

quote:I've always been mystified that these positions always require minimum numbers of years at the position. How in the hell does anybody ever get hired unless they're born with 5 years experience?? Where did the 1st medical sales professional come from?

Technical sales of Amy kind can be lucrative. Medical devices, equipment, Chemical, etc. Some engineers, chemist or other tech people who were in R&D and are personable can make good sales people in their specific industry. You are basically selling to your peers and have to know what you are talking about or they will not give you the time of day. Getting your product approved has to go through the tech guys. Purchasing buys what the tech guys tell them to.
