Just finished up my M.S. in Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering and trying to figure out what exactly the benefit of a Master’s is in the real world. Typical increase in pay over Bachelor’s, substitution for experience, etc.

That’s kind of right where I was thinking. Have seen some postings saying 5 years experience and a MS or 10 years and a BS so just wasn’t sure what the ~general~ consensus was

That's a really wide open question. You'd have to give a lot more details to get a more refined idea, and even then then the value would still be a pretty wide range.

Say two people applying for the job have identical resumes but one has a Master’s degree. How much more would the person with the Master’s make?

Seems like questions you should've asked prior to getting said degree.

I got the degree in a different field than my undergrad is in. Very happy I did it and I didn’t do it directly for an increase in pay, but now that it’s over I’m curious what the benefits might be.

Bachelors w/ no experience vs Masters w/ no experience. Would guess probably like a 30% difference, but you are talking about different job positions.

Same. I did my undergrad just to get into law school without any intention of going into that field. Then when I decided law school wasn’t for me, I was back at square one. Ended up doing a Master’s in a totally unrelated field almost as a second Bachelor’s. They were skeptical of letting me in the program but my GPA and GRE were way higher than their usual entrants so they gave me a shot. Ended up with a 4.0 and teaching a course solo my last semester.

The job I have now actually requires a Master’s although it’s not particularly well paid. But I’m happy with it.

Yeah that makes sense.

I’m just kind of trying to figure out where to go from here. I really like my current job but feel I’m underpaid and I have better experience than most anyone my age with similar credentials.

I sit on an advisory board for a one year masters program. Those students generally come out making $60-70K with 0-1 year of experience. This is above the typical $50K starting salary for those similar undergraduate majors. This masters program is fairly analytical so that adds a bit of a premium to their market value.

Completely worthless in this day and age.

This could of been googled. These subtle brags have become common on this board.

Mine allowed me to qualify for a job that I wouldn't otherwise qualify for, because I was lacking experience. It counted for 2 years of experience, and it was a 20% increase from my previous position (within the same company).

I believe that the benefits of most Masters are very industry specific. I'm not familiar with yours so I can't really comment on that part. In some fields, a MS will most definitely get you more money and be a substitution for experience. The benefits that aren't typically seen at first are the doors that it will open for you. I know a business owner who has over two decades of very specific experience in his field, but cannot sit on certain committees without the MS. Those benefits would outweigh the the cons for me. Being able to further yourself later on and network in higher circles would pay for itself at that point.

All of that being said, its only my opinion and I do not have the MS (yet).
