VA hospital job...

I am looking for the pro's and con's for working in the VA hospital system.
It seems as though starting salary may be a little lower, but retirement and benefits may pay off in long run.
Is anyone familiar with the retirement and benefits? I thank you veery much in advance...

I would assume it's the same or close to the what military gets as far as benefits/retirement.

Great benefits and the pay will be pretty good actually.
Cons- You work at the va and have to deal with the government. Have you ever been in a VA? I can use it's services for free and I still refuse to go there. I bought my own health insurance because I can't stand that place.
The people you work with. Generally, 90% of people you work with will be lazy people who are like leaches. Most will be vets that "love the military" and are similar to police officers.
Obviously, I'm on the "customer" side of things. I'm sure it's different if you're working there. That place makes me want to

i have done several months of rotations there, and like this one particular va. when asking the employees about there benefits, they all give me the "hell if i know" look.
i am not a vet.

You prove my point.

Damn near impossible to get a job there if you're not, they will be selected before you because of that 99% of the time. It's a long process to get a job there anyway, even if you are a vet.
What are you? A RN?

advanced practice nurse - i could get the job - all i get told is starting salary and raises....would like to know more...like it is rumored that work there for 5 years and get health insurance for wife and i for life...is that true? if it is, do i still have a premium? all things worth taking into consideration...retirement...do i get a fraction of salary for life after 20 years in? haven't spoken with anyone in hr, but im guessing that will be as hard as finding the information out from anyone else

Best thing you can do is educate yourself because one person might say one thing, and someone else say something totally different. It is all online in every format imaginable from very brief summaries to in depth publications on each benefit.

My husband made the switch from private practice to VA. He doesn't regret it, but it probably isn't for everyone. He had to adjust to the way they do things. It was the right decision for him though, especially since he is a vet and got credit for his military time. Great hours, low stress, fellow employees seem happier too.

It's probably good you're not a vet. I've found people either hate the military (me) and people that eat it up and love it. I have a ton of hate towards my VA so I'm extremely bias.

i need help understanding two portions:
retirement w/ FERS - it appears that after so many years of service (10? 20?) you are eligible to begin receiving monthly tax free payments from the federal government for life - (1.1% of base salary x years service/12 to calculate monthly payments) am i reading this right?
also, i read somewhere that after 5 years, you can carry blue cross/bs gold for self/spouse for life. is this right?
can you please ask husband? thanks

It is 1.1% of your base if you are 62 or older and have 20 years in. I believe only a portion of it is tax free.
As for health insurance, you can keep it after retirement but you pay the full premium.
