Teenager 1st vehicle question...
Posted on 9/20/18 at 12:18 pm
Posted on 9/20/18 at 12:18 pm
My son is 17 and we will be purchasing him a used vehicle.
I assume I just put the vehicle in my name, and put it under my insurance with my other vehicles, and add him as a driver.
Any other suggestions or is this a pretty straight forward deal?
Thanks

You have assumed correctly.
Might also want to get in touch with your insurance agent ahead of time so you can be prepared for what your new insurance premium is going to be BEFORE you buy junior's vehicle.

Make sure you take advantage of any deals the insurance company offers for good grades, driver’s ed, or extracurriculars.

Son gets in accident, insurance denies coverage, he gets sued.

You know you are completely making this part up right?

Do tell Chad. It's my understanding that all licensed drivers living in a home must be listed on the policy or specifically excluded from it.

there's coverage unless specifically excluded.
if a company picks the driver up at a renewal time, so be it.

I think if there are 3 licensed drivers in a household, 3 cars, and it can be shown that each is a primary driver of each vehicle, they can force you to have that person on the coverage. Otherwise you are lying. You insure the 3rd vehicle as a non-primary use vehicle or something and you are basically committing fraud.

For Allstate and State Farm, male drivers under age 25 living in your residence must be named on the policy to be covered, I have a couple of sons and have been down this road already.

they must when they know. they aren't excluded before.

I’d bet self reporting is covered in the t and c’s of the contract

Do as you please. They aren’t denying people’s children’s claims who aren’t specifically excluded.

Maybe not, but what you're suggesting amounts to insurance fraud. And they'll absolutely drop your coverage when/if they find out, whether that be for a claim or some other way.

That’s if he is lucky. Throw in some wrecks and speeding tickets and it goes way way up. I think at one point we were paying around $13k/yr for four vehicles.

not really, i'm suggesting he adds the vehicle.
obviously his son is already licensed and is already a household driver if you want to get spiffy with me and obviously he isn't already "added" to policy since OP is subjecting that into his options.
so technically you can whine and say he's already committed the fraud... which he really hasn't because nobody in america says to themself " i need to add this bastard to my insurance policy right now" when they get licensed... automatic coverage... like has been my point.
