re: Talk to me about American Funds
5 year return is at 6% but its been hammered a bit this year. Only .8% this year. 10% over ten years.

Looks like it follows the large Capex companies. Ive got about 45k between 5 of the funds within American Funds. We have a financial advisor and it seems like these are straight forward funds that don't require a ton of thought.

American Funds have 5.75% load, that’s why financial advisors push them. They are fairly good funds as far as funds go but the load is a deal killer for me.Would be better off with S&P 500 index fund with discount broker. The load is a significant drag on returns over time.

Most all mutual funds have a 5.75% front end load if you invest less than $25k into their A share. The fund company sets the sales charge, not the brokerage firms.

re: Talk to me about American Funds
You must have a simple Ira? that’s the only reason I’d hope you’d be in a C share. Growth fund of America has crushed it over the past 10 years but mainly cause it’s heavy in the FANG stocks.

It’s gotten to a point (with a lot of other American funds) to where the managers are handcuffed in making changes due to such large capital gains from the internal holdings.

Because of such, most would have been better off with an index fund at a lower cost, since that’s pretty much what American funds have been over the past 10-15 years.

American Funds is ok, but a lot of their funds are so big it basically like owning the index.

Financial advisors love to sell them because they get a nice commission.

I run away when I hear American Funds.

re: Talk to me about American Funds
The misinformation on this thread is stunning. Of course, OP didn't give anything to go off of...

quote:

Looks like it follows the large Capex companies.
It's a balanced fund... Has 37% bonds in it too.

quote:

American Funds have 5.75% load, that’s why financial advisors push them.
This is true, but you may very well have the load-waived depending on what the hell you're doing (which you didn't mention).

quote:

American Funds is ok, but a lot of their funds are so big it basically like owning the index.
I think this is the winner of most accurate statement on the thread. Congrats. Two internet points for you.

Do you have a real question, or should you really have just typed that into google?

re: Talk to me about American Funds
I have an American Funds Target Date R3 401k through my employer, they match 1:1 up to 6%. Since I'm an idiot when it comes to the market, the "set it and forget it" plan is better for me. We also have a Raymond James financial advisor that's a free service to all employees.

I haven't had any complaints so far, but what do I know.
