Hi everyone. I've been offered a job at a small CPA firm (6 people) in Phoenix, AZ starting at $60,000 but with no benefits. I currently have a state auditing job making $50,000 with full benefits, flex schedule, 1 day a week telecommute, CPE paid, etc. I am married with 2 children. I've always wanted to live out west, but I feel I should stay put, continue working on my CPA, and gain more experience so I can demand more. If I took the job in AZ, I would have roughly $1,100 a month to use for benefits. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Is it the summer heat, dryness, etc? I am an avid outdoorsman so I like hiking, fishing, camping, etc. It would seem outside of AZ, Colorado, Utah, etc., would be a half a day drive for weekend trips.

I believe I'd be fully vested in 4-5 years. I just started the job a little over a year ago.

That $10,000 differential isn’t enough for a job with no benefits. Go find one that pays you $10K more and included benefits.

Does your spouse work? If so, how likely is it that he/she will find a job with benefits in AZ? If not, you need to consider that healthcare for a family of four will cost you most of the $10K raise, even before you make your own retirement contribution.

Does your eomployer not provide you with a “cost of benefits” statement? Mine does....it estimates the value of insurance subsidy, retirement contribution, PTO, etc. so you see your salary plus the value of the benefits.

Friend of mine works for this firm in Denver, where there is a job opening, with benefits. Don’t know starting salary. CapinCrouse LLP. Might be worth looking into. Beware, Denver real estate is very expensive.

If after benefits the pay is a wash you should also consider cost of living out there. I’m not very familiar with Phoenix but I’m pretty sure it’s more expensive than Louisiana.

Yeah, after the wash cost of living definitely puts me negative, even if I rented.

TigerAlum1982, that would seem like an awesome place to work and a great location too. IDK how reliable Glassdoor is but the audit associate position (job opening in Denver) is around $51,000. I looked and rental property there starts around $2000 for something decent.

I hate Arizona. Have to go back soon for a deploy.

Keep your state gig. Use that flexibility to start a side hustle.

Get your CPA. Don't leave govt until you have it.

When you run the numbers, it might not be worth it because of the high cost of housing there. But, Denver is an awesome place to live. I hope to move there one day!

Yeah, agreed. I like Colorado Springs as well. So much to do and see in that state. Too many areas out there to list that I love, Tincup, Crested Butte, San Juan mountains to name a few. I've been wanting to move there for many years. Probably my favorite state out west. I hope you get out there!

Hey, TigerintheNO. It may be cheaper than NOLA but I live on the Northshore. Housing is definitely cheaper on this side. Also, I'm not sure how accurate that CNN calculator is. I've looked at a lot of homes for sale in that area and they are considerably higher than around here. I used this site. It may be a little more accurate. Who knows, though. LINK

NOLA is the exception, not the rule, in Louisiana. Everyone knows that. There are loads of rather nice places to live here for reasonable prices.

Put in BR, Hammond, Lafayette, Monroe, literally anywhere but the NOLA metro and it’s even/cheaper to live here.

Keep in mind that the word “Arizona” comes from an old Indian word that means “trailer park.”
