Starting to do some research on a gaming type lounge for kids/young adults.

Wanting to offer some computers and gaming systems with couches and semi private areas.

Will be looking to host birthday parties as well as computer type or co-op classes during the day.

Anyone familiar with these types of businesses?

Only thing that is worrisome is that there are no other around???

Do it as a community service, not as a money making venture and you won't end up disappointed.

your crowd will be the kids who don't have the means for the equipment at their house..In this day, thats a pretty low threshold

There was one open for awhile when I was growing up in Houston. Did not last long.

Why would kids/ young adults come pay to play at your gaming lounge when they can play already with their friends online from the convenience of their home?

Also I would think the startup costs would be high on the electronics plus it would be real slow during the week in the school year.

Not necessarily. In most big cities they have bars similar to this concept. You have a semi-private area with a couple couches or whatever, a screen, and most gaming consoles.

Now I'm not sure if that translates to kids, but it wouldn't have to be a low income thing.

I would look to offer classes to home school kids or adults during the day since I will have "super computers!"

Allow someone to pay me to use computers to teach others kind of thing.

If you're looking in Mandeville, there used to be one years back that didn't survive. It was right there off Causeway where the Winn Dixie was.

There’s one in Metairie called Dibbz that I’ve been to a few times when I was into gaming. Been about 8-10 years since I’ve been, but they had about 30 PC’s and it was pretty crowded majority of the time on weekends. Think they had a couple Xboxes and Playstations too but I only went for PC games.

Keep in mind that you’re going to be constantly spending money on upgrading your computers because gamers who are willing to pay to play at a place like that are going to expect top notch gaming PC’s and there’s always better/faster things coming out.

I'm debating the Mandeville area or possibly Hammond with more population 12-20.

I have looked at a few locations near the high schools for after school traffic, but not sure I need that if I can get some day classes.
I am planning on setting up to party type private rooms with computers that can also be used as classrooms.

At some point I want to include some type of older fun games. Skee ball, basketball air hockey.

Just really a low key kids hangout with friends.

With friends is the key...rather than play in your room by yourself, come hang out with your friends!

What is your age, if you don't mind telling me..I feel like you're slightly past understanding why places like this died off..I don't mean this in a disrespectful way, but its too easy these days to sit at home and do this..Odds are you're going to have to charge to cover your electricity and ridiculous internet bills...You couldn't start something like this for less than 50k and you'd be looking at a few decent PCs, TVs and Game Systems..

I do have kids and a few are into gaming and a few are not!

I play with them as a way to be involved in their interests, not really on my own.

I watch them play with headsets in and interacting with their friends, but would rather see them go somewhere and play the same games with their friends.

They have similar interests so a little social interaction could be positive for them while getting out of their rooms and into a hangout!

My son has been looking at this concept for awhile for this area too. He's in his 20's, so it's been more of a dream than a work in progress. Maybe we should get the two of you together.

My sons are gamers. Most of their gaming with friends is done from a distance online. Maybe twice per year do they have in-person LAN parties.

It seems like your target audience is the LAN party crowd. So how do you get them to do it more often?

Maybe one model is the annual QuakeCon event in Dallas. Gamers bring their own PCs. So it’s kind of like a fashion show too.

In Houston, I've seen the Mobile tournament get-ups. They host Bday parties, corporate outings, churches and different functions like that.

It's easier to bring the staging to their address.

Coolest place like this I’ve ever seen is Player 1 Video Game Bar in Orlando.
