Teenager has started taking care of a few yards, and a couple of the older ladies have asked to be invoiced for each job. If he is going to start invoicing, seems like the perfect time to start recording expenses so he can get an idea of how things are shaking out for him.

I've used Quickbooks and Peachtree, but I'm looking for something very basic to get him started. Any suggestions?

I used excel when I was in high school. Helped refine my excel skills and better understand the impact of a transaction on the financial statements. I built an invoice template and a folder for each of my customers.

I found it more fun to build out templates and financial statements. Once you have a couple hundred transactions and growth, move into a platform.

Easiest would be to set up an excel workbook, but Microsoft Money is reasonable.

Microsoft Excel can do anything that basic accounting software can do. He will have the added benefit of building skills of creating spreadsheets, charts, macros, etc.
