Figured i would get better quality response on MT....

Started at new job as a loan officer with a local bank. They will be taking a professional photo of me for their website, and the current template for their business cards is to have that photo of me on my cards as well.

Is this a good idea, or should I ask for a card template with no photo? I’m not hideous or anything, 31yo guy in good shape.

For that industry it is probably okay.

You'll get different opinions, but I think it's an effective tactic in healthcare to create family & friends referrals, which I'm sure is what you are looking for.

Photo on the card, the doc gives it to them directly, and indicates exactly what he's looking for.

"Thank you so much for coming to see me today Ms. Jones. Here is one of my cards. I'm still trying to grow my practice, so if you have any family or friends with diabetes or a thyroid condition, I would love to see them."

I find it works for us.

how much of your body do you intend on including in the picture? I'm concerned about where you're going with this.

It’s just a business style headshot in suit & tie from the mid-chest up.

Loan officers seem to be in line with realtors, they put their faces out there on anything they can. Assuming you’re not hideous, put your pic on your business cards.

I typically feel that pictures on cards or email signatures are Busch League. Especially with bankers and title companies.

Are you a hooker? If so, yes. An actor? If so, sure, why not.

Edit: (after reading other responses) - Jeeze, is this actually acceptable? It seems trashy AF to me, but then I still take off my baseball cap indoors.

I do think this is very industry-specific. If it's normal company practice to have one... I think in that line of work it's ok.

I love that line of asking for referrals... it's something we teach our young CPAs.

I'm curious if you think having a face on the card actually helps... or if it's the asking for referrals that does the trick.

That is a very loaded question that anonymity will allow me to answer honestly.

The face on the card helps if it's a pleasant one. My 5 physicians (2 guys, 3 girls) are 37-42 years old. For the medical field, they are all young, in shape, and would be considered attractive by most. Our specialty is such that their appearances matters. Not quite to the degree of a plastic surgeons office, but 2/3rds of my patients come here diabetic or obese. My docs look and act the part of what we teach patients, with regard to body type, diet, exercise, etc... And I think their head shots can reinforce that to a degree.

But, IMO, the effort to specify that you are seeking referrals, and what kind of referrals you want, is the more effective part of the routine. It's a personal touch in a healthcare system that is becoming decreasingly detached from human interaction. My patients could, if they were so inclined, get all the way to the exam room without ever speaking to one of my human employees. But my docs spend a significant amount of time in the room (compared to other MD's) with patients, and the card is just a personal touch we try and add to the end of the visit.

I'm in that industry and personally, I wouldn't do it. If I see a banker's business card with his picture on it, I would automatically think "Noob."

Look at the cards of the Sr. VP's and up at the bank. Do they have pics on their cards? Then do the same with the higher level officers at the other banks. I would expect very few do.

Or consider the contrarian approach to conventional wisdom and do the opposite and have your pic on the card. But own it, point out your pic to everyone you give it to. Differentiate yourself from the other bankers and give your clients and prospects added opportunity to remember who you are.
