Listed my grandmothers car for sale online and I’m starting to get emails and texts from interested buyers(google voice # and new email address, not my personal cell).

One individual seems interested but stated he just wants to mail me a check and arrange to pick it up. Appears he/she is located in Canada and is asking for my name, address, and phone number, stating he’ll send tracking info. once check is mailed. I was going to get a PO Box set up and use that address.

Question, how would the paperwork get handled? Anyone have experience selling a vehicle this way?

Might want to do it by word of mouth. Ask your mechanic if he knows anyone who's been a frequent flyer lately. Or ask your pastor if he knows anyone looking to buy a vehicle.

The old way - someone from out of the country really loves your vehicle, willing to pay extra for it. They send a check for more than you’re asking but then say something like I need you to pay shipping ( that’s why I sent extra). You will send the $1500 for shipping, the check they sent you will invariably bounce and you will never hear from the buyer again.

That is an absolute scam, been around for a long time. Depending on the age, I would take to carmax or auto nation and have them buy it. You can get bids from them online. I've done this and it's a really easy transaction.

Still happening this way, I sell a few items through some specialty web sites, and have received several of these offers. A couple even sent a check after I told the I was not interested.

Google "Someone wants to buy my car without seeing it" and read of few of the dozens of scam articles that appear.

From an article "4 Typical Scams":

quote:

#1. Offering to buy sight-unseen After listing your car, you get an instant response from a buyer who offers to buy your car without taking a look at it first because he or she is working offshore now or buying it for their parents living in a different state. It sounds like you enter an easy deal but it can be considered a warning sign of the first part of a larger scam. The buyer will send you a bad check or promise to wire the money and have someone else to pick up your car.

quote:

Nearly 100 car sellers on Craigslist were targeted by a scam in the Chicago area that left sellers without their cars and holding rubber checks, the National Insurance Crime Bureau reported last year. ... Many scams begin with pleas for help or unusual requests such as to ship a car out of the country.
