Anyone invest in any good ones? I don't have any real estate in any of my portfolios and I am looking at adding one

I've been looking at HCP. I want to get into a REIT and this one has a good, consistent dividend.

Yeah I know. I figured they were since everyone is after yield right now. I'm just trying to find some good ones and once(if) the 10 year gets back up around 2.5% I'll pick up a position and start reinvesting dividends

SP500 is about to break REITs out of the "financial services" sector, which it made no sense being grouped with anyway. Index investors may be impacted

quote:

Investors who hold financial-sector funds in taxable accounts—as opposed to tax-sheltered retirement accounts such as IRAs—should consider two questions ahead of the change, says Mr. Gordon.

The first is whether they will face a surprise tax bill if a financial-sector fund sells its REITs in order to conform to the shift in the index.

In addition, investors should ask what will happen to their current REIT exposure—will it drop because the fund manager has sold REIT shares in order to stay aligned with the financial-sector index, which has mostly banks, insurers and asset managers? This change could make a difference. REITs averaged a 9.8% return annually since mid-2008, far outstripping the 3.5% returned by bank stocks, according to Morningstar analyst Alex Bryan.

O has increased almost 70% since April 2014, along with the monthly dividends- I'm looking for the opportunity to buy more, but it's been up almost every day over the past 30-40 days

honestly with where the market is, with so few deals to be had, I say just sell puts a month out or a few months out on names you want at prices you dont mind paying. For me its Nike-50, SBUX-50,etc

Ya yields are just gone now JNJ is at 2.5%, MO is just over 3%, even trash like Mcdonalds is at super high levels. Hey if people are that desperate for passive yields they can have them. I mean these yields are awful. Ill let the pigs buy them and Ill just sell puts and make a conservative ROI for the time being. The game is buy low sell high, I cant even see a 10% return on the SPY from here in 5 years even, thats SPY 240 lol we;re up 20% from february for god sakes, I didn't know we were in boom times economically.

I've even been raising cash by selling some extreme puts that probably wont even happen but Id buy if they did like AMZN $300 or GOOGL $340 2018 puts. The AMZN 2018 $300 puts need $35,000 in margin total for 10 contracts that gave me just about $5,000 immediately now.

I currently have a position in about 4 of them.
Two have been on fire the last 3 months up 10-25%.
CONE builds data storage centers for cloud computing.
LTC builds long term health care facilities.
Makes sense the 2 industries would be doing well these days.
Decent divs, LTC pays monthly.

I'm also in IVR and ATAX, both in a Roth.

ATAX is not a REIT, also it's distributions are tax exempt so i'm not sure it's wise to own in an IRA, you might want to check on that.

Why?

Both of mine have done fine over the past two years. Almost all of my other stuff is traded. My CFP picked those two REITs, which was the only reason I bought them. I'm sure he made good commissions on them, but I'm fine with that as long as it doesn't cost me anything and as long as it makes good income and the value doesn't drop.
