Question for small business owners of retail spaces
I'm in the process of selecting my initial product mix and will figure out quantities as I move a little further down the road.

My question is centered around planograms and if it is even feasible to hire a visual merchandising specialist (consultant)? A quick Google search for my area doesn't reveal too much.

Planogram software, from the research that I have done, can be pricey -- so my thought is if I hiring a visual merchandising specialist to help with shelf layout may be cost effective if by the hour?

I know that I want my store's layout to be simplified. Store must be organized, with strategic displays and clear departments with signs clearly labeled to show customer where product is. I want the window areas to be merchandised with high margin items and accessories so that I have an opportunity to appeal to anyone that walks by. And lastly, I know I want to lay out my store so that I can send the customers in the direction that is most profitable for me.

Getting proper displays and signage is a must as well as bringing in graphics to surround my store so people will know what kind of store they are in.

Saying all this, for those of you with more experience at this that I have right now, is it worth pursing a visual merchandising specialist?

I wouldn't, if use Google sketchy to layout the building. identify signage locations and then place the appropriate space there for signs to see how it would look. also you could stand in middle of empty space and take pictures using an olio board and snipping tool to have mockups done for free of signage. shelf spacing can go in sketchup

Is an Olioboard similar to freelancers such as Fiverr? Haven't done any research on this, but I appreciate the suggestions for Google Sketchup and Olioboard.

Had a buddy that did it for awhile before getting in on some bigger better deals. Have another one doing it now still. Interesting stuff.

Not fairly large.

This will be more of a complementary service to the rest of my business, i.e. approximately 15 to 20 percent of total revenue, but has the potential for growth if positioned and marketed right. This is one of 5 revenue streams that I am looking to do.

With regard to your buddy/buddies, I would love to hear what lessons he/they learned going from the first one to the second.

I'm trying to talk to as many people as possible to learn as much as I can before making mistakes on my own.

Do you have a TD e-mail? I don't have one tbh so if you don't mind sharing I can try to coordinate a convo between y'all.

Hang on, so you've been posting for a year about the business you are going to open with all these questions/concern and it's been a gas station the whole time? I'm all for doing things right and being prepared, but come on.

re: Question for small business owners of retail spaces
As long as it a legitimate, viable business that provides for my family and me, what difference does it make if it is a gas station convenient store?
