Product owner role? What is it? What are it’s functions?
Does anyone do this role? If so what is it? What is your day to day like?

I’ve heard different things. On one hand I have heard it is the person that sets the vision and strategy for a product then hands it off to folks to be delivered, the othe is that it’s a leadership position without authority.

In my experience product owners basically are the decision makers for how an application functions. Any major configurations or customizations would go through them. Many do have employees that work as product analysts under them..it all depends on the size of the initiative.

Tons of youtube videos on it. Assuming this is on an agile team or something like it?

I'm currently a product manager at a large tech company.

The development teams rarely understand and generally don't need to understand the needs of the end user. Product manager (owner) does set the vision for the product as they are most in tune with the customer and what the product needs to accomplish. I guess you could say the customer ultimately dictates the vision and the product manager is the bridge between customer need and the engineers.

That said, the other part about leadership without authority is also 100% accurate. You are setting deliverables, timelines, etc but at the end of the day you likely cant code and the dev teams don't report to you directly. You'll have to learn to influence because direct orders cant happen.

Because you are influencing and not coding yourself you'll focus more on organization of the tech teams, tracking progress, working with stakeholders to determine new use cases for the product, brainstorming etc. Expect meeting after meeting after meeting.

In summation, you're a nerd wrangler.

I assume you're considering a product owner role, if so I'd be more than happy to get into specifics of my experience here.
