With the large number of plants, there is always someone hiring. Problem is they average around 50-200 people applying per position.

I would not want to work there, unless they planning on some serious upgrades. Looks like Freddie Krueger lives there.

That is true that there are a large number of applicants for only a few positions. And that goes for not only operators but electricians, instrument techs and so on.

More than half of the people applying have no relevant plant experience, and have no schooling in the field. The number of real, qualified applicants is smaller than what it looks.

A buddy of mine worked there for years, help shutdown the plant and moved on.

True.

Many people are retiring. Most were hired in the early 80's, many of those are in the retirement age, with a little over 30 years service. It could help to know someone once you get to the interview stage.

Very true Dad, knowing someone will go a long way. These jobs are very hard to come by these days so any professional advantage is worth taking.

P.S. Dad, I met you at the recruiting bash.... Whats the chances we get together and tailgate this year?

I have no experience in a plant or construction or anything like that. I've always worked in an office setting and currently work for state farm - I have a BA degree from lsu so what are the chances I would get hired as an operator?? Been thinking about it for some time. Help me out!!!

Plant operator jobs
Does anyone know if process operators will be in demand in the next few years between Baton Rouge and the river parish areas? I know a few years ago a lot of plants were hiring, but I don't know if demand has fallen since a lot of retirees have been replaced

Yes indeed. We are looking to hire 4 or 5 more operators now. Lot of guys retiring out of these 30+ year old plants these days. Just can't find good mechanical inclined people to hire. All good people with experience are working. Most kids these days go to college and don't want to work in the plants. Can't say I blame them. I've been in them since 86.

Do y'all typically recruit new hires from the PTech program in Reserve, LA?

What are the typical "top pay" hourly rates in the better plants around here (ex. Valero, Marathon, Shell, etc)?

We do sometimes. Depends on our needs. We prefer people with experience.
