O&G stocks - when to start taking profits?
Posted by 632627 on 3/9/22 at 8:54 am12
What’s everyone’s strategy with these?
A month ago, I was planning to hold (without shedding any positions) throughout the duration of Biden’s presidency.
Now starting to rethink that with recent sharp run up along with other sectors tanking. Now could be a good time to take some profits and rebalance.
I own xle, xom, cvx, shel, BP, eog, hal, oxy and slb

This quarter or next quarter?
I slowly acquire all my shares, so my costs are all over the place. If a stock has a drastic increase on the day, I'll sell some of my higher cost shares that day, because in this market, those gains are rarely sustained more than a day or two. I can buy them back at a lower cost a few days later.
I'm probably not making a huge difference in my overall gains than if I just left it alone, it's more like a hobby for me.

I’m in same boat. I’m up over 100% in CVX and XOM over past 24-30 months. Same with LPI.
How high can it go before it corrects 30%? Hate to sell with the current outlook though.

Who knows? But it's going to take a couple of years for supply to catch up with demand unless Biden allows Iran to flood the market. That's my one concern. Nobody is willing to risk profits after the last two years on drilling and exploration. Not to mention supply chain shortages. I don't blame O&G companies for banking some cash for awhile until we see if prices are sustained and how everything shakes out with COVID, mid-terms, Russia, Iran, OPEC etc.

I should mention that I'm doing this in tax advantaged accounts, otherwise the short term gains and wash sales would make it pointless for me.

Kudos to anyone who bought at rock bottom during the early stages of the pandemi
Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

I had a conversation this week with a friend of mine who is a financial advisor for one of the major brokerage firms. They are recommending taking profits now because of the recent run up in price as well as because of the secular headwinds the industry is facing.
I must also note that they were talking about those headwinds a year ago before the share prices doubled. I did not take his advice and am keeping mine because I like the dividend.

I'm not in the O&G market except for a few hundred shares of Tell, but I suspect that when a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia is starting to happen, that $130 a barrel oil will crater.
Biden is the joker in the deck and he loves to put up road blocks and kinks in the supply chain.

I reckon why futures ETFs like UCO have dropped 20% today.

Why I'm wondering if I should hold on UCO still or if it will keep dropping this week. I have plenty of room, but wasn't expecting a 20%+ drop yet.
Thoughts anyone?

I sold every share I owned of CVX this morning. Bought under 70 and sold at 166. I’m happy with it.

I sold all of my Transocean as made a nice little profit today as well. Biden's absurd deal with Iran and Venezuela cost US companies today.
