I just texted him. I was wrong and he's actually mining Dashcoin, not bitcoin. And he isn't selling them, just holding them and hoping the price skyrockets. I guess he thinks it's worth a shot to mine them passively and he might get rich one day. With the way the prices have been lately I can't imagine it's a profitable venture. I don't know why he wouldn't just buy some instead.

not happening bro, you need a mining rig, and the cost of electricity in America and the scarcity of the cards needed make mining in America pretty much unprofitable.

You can mine some alts though
