Is it a good idea to try and hit $18,500 on the 401K in Q1? Buy the 401K investments early in the year?

Is this a legit question, troll, or humble brag?

If you can afford to do it, yes.

Thanks!

Not a troll. Yes, I do well. No, I'm not an OT baller.

The conventional wisdom is to spread it out.

But if you think the market is on sale, go for it.

Absolutly not for most people, you will be giving up the matching funds for the rest of the year.

Wasn’t this discussed a few weeks/months ago and varied by company?

Correct, with most companies matching even if you employ the strategy in the OP.

I have worked for a few large companies during my carreer and have yet to see one that adds a match if you don't on a monthly basis, I'm sure they are out there but the vast majority of folks will lose in this situation.

Assuming an s+p fund, you would have more shares if you bought on April/May 1st than Jan/feb/March 1st, just glancing at the charts.

I would DCA throughout the year.

Interesting. I think ours just does 4% w/ a $4k cap. I don't think you have to contribute every month.

Make sure your employer will true you up on any match they offer. Some only match on a per pay period basis.

Read this article & confirm your company's policy before you make a decision.

My company continues to match regardless, but apparently several don't.

Yeah my company doesn’t match after you hit the cap. Definitely something people need to review.

I think probably not a good idea, because as mentioned above, (1) in a 1-year time frame I'm not sure it makes sense to try to time the market, particularly if you aren't penalized for spreading it out, and (2) you may miss out on company match if you structure it this way.

Trying to load up in January of this year would certainly have been a mistake.

This is not ironclad. My last employer did the match throughout the year. My wife's employer does the match throughout the year.

I think the fact that there is this much debate on the topic means its probably not worth it to fine tune your 401k and you might as well just leave it alone

I think it varies by person. I personally want to load up the wife's 401k early in the year. She doesn't make enough to support us but its close. With 401k contributions, she is much farther off.

My income has wide fluctuations from $0 down to 20% of what i would earn in a year. Having as much cash coming in from her side helps us to manage our situation.
