LinkedIn Questions

So after getting enough of the email invitations from people I know, I finally broke down and set up a LinkedIn page.
I'm not currently looking for a job, but when the time comes eventually it seems like a good thing to have set up. Plus it is nice to keep up with old colleagues with minimal effort.
A few questions:
What is the value (cost versus risk) of putting your entire detailed resume on LinkedIn? My current job has about an eight word description, and just to screen out some of the recruiters regarding stuff I have no background or interest in. It seems risky to put out all of those intricate details.
Do you accept connections from people that you don't know well and or have worked with? Specifically, I have received a few connect requests from people with some connections in common. I recognize the names but couldn't pick them out of a lineup. So despite not wanting to come across as a dick, I just ignore the requests. However, I always accept connect requests from people at my company.
On that note, do you initiate connections to people at your company? For some reason it seems odd or cliqueish to me.
Any thoughts from the MT on these issues or other LinkedIn tips?

Really up to you what you want to put out there. It is a lot like a social networking site except for professionals. The biggest value I've found is tracking where my connections are going in terms of their careers and the companies they are working for. I have also contacted recruiters on linkedin who have been able to get me interviews with companies. LI has been pretty good for me personally.

If I've met them, if they're gainfully employed and they're not selling me something then I add them. Not hard to tell what their motives are based on their profiles.

I have used linkedin for 5 or 6 years and have experienced no downside wrt having details about my work history and skills out there. I do get contacted by recruiters but its always about jobs that are at least in the ballpark of what I do.

I think I've only done this once or twice, but the people who sent connection requests had good networks. I saw it as adding value to my own network.
That said, I generally don't do this and you shouldn't feel bad about ignoring requests. I've even ignored requests from former coworkers because they were either worthless or complete dicks.

As much as possible. That's what it's there for! My general rule is that if I had more than a causal conversation with a coworker who doesn't seem like a loser, I invite them. It usually never hurts. Besides, you never know who might end up working somewhere down the line at a company you want in to.

You seem pretty mindful so I believe it will work for you just fine. Remember, it's only a tool to make your networking easier, but the tried and true rules of networking still apply.

I can't see the downside to people possibly helping your career.

It's not FB so the rules of connecting are different in my view I've accepted lots of requests from individuals in my field that I haven't met, yet, in my relative position at other companies I've heard of...it's a biz networking site - so network.

I like it. Has worked we'll.
As a rule, I don't add anyone to my network unless I know them well personally our have worked with them directly for at least a month.

LinkedIn is probably my favorite social networking site now. I hate the groups and how much spam is in them, but I genuinely enjoy keeping track of people's careers.
I get occasional recruiter emails and only expect that to rise over the years.

I try not to use the groups. And I've turned off the emails for the ones I'm in.

I am in a ton of them but I turn off emails for all of them, like you.
I check one or two of then occasionally.
The groups make me lower my expectations for humanity. Some of the stuff in there is just utter horse shite.

This is pretty much me.
The group for my company is pretty good. Helps me keep up with the industry but the rest is not really worth dealing with.
It seems like a good idea. I'm told the concept works on Facebook but it sure doesn't on LinkedIn.
