I’m in sales and all is well, however there’s something missing in my work life and I’m considering a change in the upcoming year or two. If I look to the franchise industry, what are your top two tips or questions you would ask the parent company before getting into bed with them?

Can you show me your most successful franchisees?

I’d want to understand why they went the franchise route in the first place. If the business is so incredibly successful, why franchise it? There could be legitimate reasons for doing so, capital constraints being one of them. I’d just want to understand that, though. For many of these operations, franchising becomes “the” business, and they reckon franchising to unsuspecting franchisees is more attractive than the underlying business itself. I’d stay away from those situations.

On the flip side, how many of your franchisees have gone out of business?

Surf the net for bulletin boards or Facebook groups of franchisees. Sometimes they gather and complain about various issues.
