Inflation reality hitting you
Posted by thunderbird1100 on 6/22/21 at 11:45 am275
I'm sure others have some recent stories, but a real noticeable piece of high inflation hit me today.
Havent been to (physical) workplace in a while and ate out but was in today and went to a cheeseburger joint we used to frequent pre-covid.
Cheeseburger meal (burger/fries/drink) was always $9.89 there, it's now $11.49. 16% higher.
Also used to get a 4 piece tender meal which was $6.99, now it's $8.49. Over 21% higher.
Anyone else got some recent stories like this? Usually things like this people rarely notice because its a buck here/there, but imagine if you ate out 3-4 times a week for work and it was 15-20% higher overall than over a year ago. That sh*t adds up

I see it everywhere.
My favorite local BBQ place went up by $3 on their Family meal deal and also quit serving beef brisket due to their cost tripling they said.

Meat price impacted by ransom-ware incident few weeks back?
Shortage of truck drivers in transportation industry must be in play.
I see "help wanted" signs in too many places; presume that is driving up wages as businesses compete for talent.
Curious how many businesses had to re-structure/finance loans to stay afloat and now paying higher notes payable post-Covid, putting upward pressure on prices.

Beer prices are astonishing. Especially in gas stations. Some of the local Houston breweries are now charging $10.99 for a SIX pack. Two years ago they were all $7.99 at most...
This could be due to increased demand though.

I’ve noticed a lot of places have increased their plate lunch prices. Last week for $11.50, I got 1/2 cup of fries, 3 pieces of fried catfish and 4 small hush puppies. I was shocked at the price and the lack of food.

No exaggeration, we called several weeks ago to a locally owned place to get 2 cheeseburger meals and a kids chicken tender to go. It was $50. We called back and cancelled the order. $16 for a burger and fries..
Idk if it has anything to do with inflation or just the restaurant is out of whack price wise, but for that I'll go somewhere else or just cook myself.

We are experiencing inflation right now. Much of that is due to supply chain disruptions.
The bigger questions are:
1) Has it peaked?
2) If not, when will it? If so, will it get back to sub-2% or remain above 2% for a while?
What are your best guesses to those questions?

Probably not. Most experts are saying late 4th quarter/early 2022.
Have you seen basic hotel prices lately? Look at random Hilton and holiday inn properties in popular beach cities and you’ll see plenty for over $450 a night when it’s traditionally maybe $250 a night.
A lot of realtor friends have said the housing market is cooling off a bit.

Cost of printing presses and shoplifting passed on to you!
quote:remember when a case of beer was like 16.99 pre 2008 gas hike. the price went up due to "cost of delivery" well when gas price plummeted the beer prices stayed the same.

I think there are a lot of businesses strategically hiking prices. If everyone is running around with their hair on fire over inflation, it creates a perfect excuse, regardless of whether or not your input prices have actually increased.

Pizza prices (papa John’s, domino’s, Pizza Hut, etc..) seem to be the same for like the last 15 years. It’s always a $7.99 or $9.99 special.

Correct. I know added toppings go up in price I was referring to the takeout and other specials you see on their commercials.
