SOMEONE please explain this to me.

If I want to take that risk, why am I not allowed to do so? Seriously. I'm confident in our situation to do what we need to do.

So why can't I opt for NO insurance if I don't want it??

You should be able to self insure unless you live in some sort of PUD that has special requirements.

Probably a dumb question on my part. If your home is paid in full, what's stopping you from self-insuring?

If your house is mortgage free, who is telling you you have to have insurance?

Who told you that you can't self insure?

I called Farm Bureau to see if they could see our LA Citizens new premium on their end yet. She said no but to expect 65% or so BUT some haven't been that high.

I then said we are considering just self insuring and she said no can do.

Our agent was out for the day so this was the secretary ... left a message for him to call me tomorrow.

She wouldn't know if you can self insure or not.

The only party who could force you to insure would be a HOA or condo association and that would require bylaws as such prior to you moving in.

I've never seen those types of bylaws. But they could exist.

If you don't pay the renewal, I promise you won't have coverage. She doesn't know what she's talking about

she is incorrect. You can self insure on both fire and/or wind/hail. You can keep your Farm Bureau hazard and drop the wind coverage through Citizens

Is this for flood insurance or just hazard insurance? If you’re in a flood zone aren’t you required to get flood only in order to qualify for any fema aid etc etc. Have no clue, just asking.

And your agent can pound sand. You don’t have to have insurance if you don’t have a mortgage. Unless there’s something you’re not revealing

She probably didn't know what "self-insure" meant.

But Farm Bureau can't tell you what to do. Just don't pay them bill and see how fast you are self-insured.

I know a number of high net worth individuals self insuring for wind / storms in New Orleans and along the MS coast. They are insuring only for fire.
