Totally understand. Your learn this stuff as you go and, as with all things, you'll make mistakes from time to time. It's all about what you do with them.

Good luck, man!

Understand that you can absolutely ask to see information on their benefits package prior to accepting any offer.

I've done this and asked for a salary of about $1,500 ABOVE my current salary and provided them with reasoning that hopefully they buy. Thanks for the help .

2 interviews and an offer in the same week

I wouldn't consider this fishy, really. My current job was offered to me late in the afternoon on the same day that I interviewed (earlier in the AM). Interestingly, I was offered a job here 9 years before, also on the same day as I interviewed (though at that time, they were still finishing out the office building and no one was actually housed out of here yet). I turned it down the first time for a number of reasons and kicked myself for a few years afterward. Never expected that scenario to happen again when I applied last year, and yet it did. And I've been happy as pie since I came on board.

not seeing their benefits package

It sounds like this is more an issue of him not having asked to see them, not that they are not willing to disclose them. Not every company (in fact, exactly NONE that I've ever interviewed with) hands out a detailed benefits menu during the interview process without being asked for it.

Typically the benefits are spelled out in the offer package

I am assuming that he was called and issued a verbal offer. I presume he does not yet have a formal offer letter, though I may be wrong.

Worse comes to worse you can always take on a small job with your freed time until the salary settles at a rate you are comfortable with. Seems upward mobility and quality of life are the major drivers for you.

True. It is likely on the up and up, just the way it read raised some red flags. I've also gotten offers fairly quickly, though after just one interview. Places that do 2 interviews are a little more deliberate in their process in my experience.

Gotcha. And yes, everybody does it a little differently. You just never know. But after a second interview, I would think there's all the more reason to be ready to make the offer. I know in instances where I am hiring someone, by the time we get to interview number two, we're down to two, no more than three candidates. We would usually know after completing that second round who we want to pitch an offer to and it would happen within a day or so. But again, there's definitely some variance.

re: I have a job offer on the table - Updated OP
They just emailed me today saying an offer was being extended for X salary with benefits Y,Z, ZZ, etc. It wasn't a formal offer it was just letting me know they will hold the position for me pending approval of the background check.

I responded saying I would like to see the benefits package to know how it compares to what I currently have. A formal offer should be coming down the line very soon.

They are a smallish web development company that has moved their headquarters from Hawaii to Dallas in the last year and a half. They are ready to expand to meet demand after getting settled in the city, which is why they are looking to add people quickly.

Now, that is interesting. I would have expected a call to make the offer. That being said, sounds like they are IT folks and this may not be all that uncommon with the unsociable nerd horde.

Give them a reasonable counter. I've done it to three companies and have never been turned down. Additionally, you might want to consider countering for benefits. It is possible to negotiate for things like more PTO.

Depends on the field. There are plenty of places where an offer for a guy with less that 3 years of experience is what it is. If it's still an entry level position, he may not have much wiggle room.

It was literally 30 minutes after I walked out of a face to face meeting with the CEO. For a web development company, emails are the first and most preferred form of communication.

In reality, it should be the standard. Paper trail and all.

Update:

Officially accepted the new job. They accepted my counter offer on salary and I now am receiving a small raise from my current salary.

As an added bonus, I will be getting 5 more PTO days a year than I currently get, cheaper health insurance, an option to buy into a company stock plan (They were bought out last year by a larger national company but still work mostly independently), and most importantly no more after hours or weekend work days. And no travel.

I feel like a winner and you guys all helped. Appreciate it greatly.
