I started a new job in December of last year - I fully funded my 2018 HSA with my December paychecks as I feel it was the best investment tax strategy out there.

One caveat - my company (who I guess is the manager) puts it in a freaking checking account with zero percent interest. Is it possible to move this to something that can invest in an index fund like a 401K - if I'm still employed at the company? I guess I would be requesting a change in managers? I don't plan on touching any of my (or employer matching) HSA contributions/earnings until I retire.

You can have it roll over once a year(not positive on if you can do it more) to another HSA administrator. You would keep your current account but add a new one to act as your investment account for the HSA. I highly suggest Lively. They have zero fees and partner with TD Ameritrade so you can invest in nearly anything. Typical trading fees apply.

I would call Lively or online chat with them they will walk you through it and even handle the transfer of money for you by contacting your current custodian once you give them approval.

Thanks for mentioning Lively. I was unaware of them until that.

I have an existing HSA that's still with Optum - my new employer doesn't offer an HDHP. Optum isn't horrible, but it's far from ideal IMO. I have several accounts with T.D. Ameritrade/TOS, so I like the idea of getting the HSA (sort of) under that roof too. I'll certainly check them out.

Fidelity now will let anyone open an HSA account. I opened one a few weeks ago and transferred my old HSA there.
