but you do not want to give the State/Fed an interest free loan

Yeah, the horror of the government getting that $3 in interest you’re missing out on.

I hate filling out these W-4s but fear I did not withhold enough for 2017 so want to update mine for 2018.

I'm married and we welcomed a new baby last September (2017). Thus, for my 2017 W-4 I put "2" as my total allowances, representing "1" for line A (i.e., no one else can claim me as a dependent) plus "1" for line D (i.e., the number of dependents I will claim on my tax return).

To withhold more, should I disregard the various allowances and just put "1" and leave it at that?

Well it's not only an interest free loan, it's an interest free loan that your not able to use in that time given to someone who already takes thousands of dollars from you every year and spends it all irresponsibly.

Do not change to Married if you are both working. If you change to married you will pay a substantial amount to the IRS in April of next year.

I would advise you to wait until the IRS witholding calculator comes out in late February and go from there

Is that still the case? I think I remember something about the Senate bill eliminating marriage penalties but I don't know if that survived reconciliation.
