How are insurance companies handling transgenders and non-binarys?
Is there a morality table for these 'people'?

re: How are insurance companies handling transgenders and non-binarys?
So, I have an aunt that became an uncle, and he asked me this question last fall as he was looking to buy some life insurance, and wanted me to help him.

First of all, there is male mortality tables and female mortality tables, there doesn't seem to be other options. So, do you put them on the male chart or the female chart?

From talking to several insurance brokers/agents I know, it seems like the answer depends not only from company to company, but also from underwriter to underwriter at the same company.

But it seems like for transgenders, if you have undergone reassignment surgery or other medical processes, they would be more likely to consider you at your chosen gender.

Also, it seems like if a female transitions to male, the insurer is more likely to be willing to rate them as a male, as opposed to a male transitioning to a female (probably because male rates can still be higher, especially at sub-standard ratings).

Something else came out of my conversations, and it's this: Transgender people, in many instances, have a history of depression, and that can affect their rates.

Non-binary, I have no idea, but I would think it would have to be based on assigned gender, or maybe male since that is higher?

If I were the underwriter, I would lean toward declining them on the grounds of not having enough data to properly evaluate.

Best case I'd assign them the more expensive gender.

Thinking of making the switch?
