Anyone have or familiar with Maison Insurance. Shopping around now and they seem to have the best quote.

I have Maison... Rate is really good. One of the few companies that I found that didn't have a huge wind/hail or named storm deductible in my area. I currently work in property claims, not with Maison though. You won't really know how good they are until you have a claim. I spoke with a few people in the area that have had claims with Maison. They use independent adjusters, so its a little slower process than some of the bigger names but haven't heard of any real issues.

If you do go with Maison increase your water back up as I believe standard its a $5,000 limit and its pretty cheap to increase.

Thanks man. Water backup is a 5,000 limit. I'll have to look into that.

They are based out of BR and very small. I know a lot of people who are independent agents and they were scared to put people with them due to weak financials.

This is second hand info though so TIFWIW. I'd look into them though if I were you and looking to move your home insurance to them.

You nailed it.

The rates are low because the financials suck.

They are buying business and praying for no windstorms this year.

My current agent just told me she will ship around the market for a new quote for me but first they had to know our current occupations. Is that normal? Seems like they just want to know how much we make so they know how much they can charge us. Ugh.

I don't play in the personal lines market but credit based type of questions shouldn't cause alarm

I mean, if you've got a 500k house on 30k annual you might think about lighting that fricker up.

Ok thanks. I'm always skeptical when it comes to stuff like this.

This all came about when I noticed my insurance coverage has steadily increased each year and now the most recent renewal quote has both properties at almost double of what they are worth. I emailed my agent to correct the amount and she came back asking why I am requesting the change and if it's because I want a cheaper premium, maybe she could shop the market and give me one.

I told her I always want the best quote she can give me. Duh.

Maison is a fairly garbage company. Some insurance agencies have better financials than Maison.

In any case, lots of homeowner company online raters ask for occupations during the quoting process. Usually i'm just making up something instead of asking. For corksoaker, i'd put home wrecker who loves beer.

Curious.

Market value and replacement cost (how the policy is rated) can be different but I can't imagine it's that far off.

Land value isn't included as I'm sure you know.

Replacement cost will always include cost of demolition and having to get back from scratch in order to rebuild. Lots of companies replacement cost seem high but in reality it's really not if there was ever a worst case scenario

So how much protection should one carry? In comparison to appraisal value of home.

Now my current agent just got back with me about new quotes but with a new company. She said my current policy cannot be changed to reflect a more accurate value/protection amount for our homes. Is this normal?

Even the new quote is for values more than what I told her I wanted. However, they are not double of what the home is worth like our current policies.

who is current company?

some companies don't like decreasing coverages on existing policies, can sometimes be done but got to send in an updated replacement cost estimator and go through underwriting. usually much easier to rewrite elsewhere and lower coverage that way but keep in mind a little bit of what your savings is compared to coverage lost.

Allstate, but the actual policy is not Allstate since they are still not writing policies down here since Katrina. The current policy is with north light speciality but it is through Allstate.

So, they can increase coverage all they want each year, but not decrease it to reflect appraisal value?

Between tax assessment, appraisal value, purchase price, and homeowners insurance, my home value is all over the place.
