With those kind of rates, there has to be a catch. Those rates are better than CD rates.

There are a lot of catches. There's a sample on the main page of the blog he linked to: you have to make at least 10 visa purchases a month, do a certain number of ATM withdrawals, etc. If you miss the limits one month, your rate goes down to 0.10%.

Must use online bill pay or direct deposit, 12 check card transactions per month, must get paperless statements. Also, the La one I checked out...you have to be a resident of Louisiana.

Most people won't hit all those requirements and the rate drops.

I was wondering...what is the benefit of so many check card transactions to the bank?

I've wondered the same. You have to assume vendors pay the same 2.5% transaction fee to the CC company they pay on a CC (not debit) transaction, and the bank gets a cu.

It's also apparent to me that paper check transactions are expensive for banks.

I use Campus Federal.

The requirements are debit card(check card) transactions per month. There is no merchant fees involed, saves CU on the cost of processing all the paper checks written by members and direct deposits save on the cost of tellers & employees.

I usually hit the number of transactions by about the 20th of the month.

I use Renasant. I easily meet all of the requirements every month. 10 debit card purchases, direct deposit, paperless statements.

Yea I have Campus Federal....works awesome and very easy, at least for me, to hit all the "goals"

there is a $25,000 cap on what they will pay interest on, but hell its great getting the money every month, plus they refund atm fees.

I've had an account since August w/ one of these banks. The only "catch" is having to use your debit card either 10 or 15 times a month (don't remember, never a problem). They refund all ATM fees and if you don't use your visa enough, you receive 1% interest that month only. The rate would return to normal the next month.

I've had a accounts with two of the banks(one for 3 years the other for a year). The debit transactions arent really a big deal, the wife more than takes care of the requirement on the primary account, and I make a bunch of small purchases on the other.

Nope I have banked with one of these banks since inception of the program

This is a simple mechanism to manage daily cash flow and minimize operational cost- reduce paper check writing, reduce manual transactions and move to electronic--
