I would really like input about this and not everyone bitching at me and claiming I am a dumbass and this and that. I would really like your opinion

Going into 2020, I am strongly considering sending all of my healthcare providers a letter via certified mail that says something along the lines of;

"By you accepting my insurance means that you agree to my plans fee schedule. you do not have the right to balance bill me. All exams, diagnostic services (xray, ultrasound, lab work etc..) will be paid to you by the agreed upon rate that you have established and agreed to with my insurance provider. If you have to outsource any services such as lab work you are to only do so according to what my plan allows. I will not pay for any additional bills that are over and above what my insurance is paying you for.

How can I very kindly tell my providers, you don't have the right to balance bill me. If my insurance allows for $85.00 in lab fees you don't have the right to charge me $100.00 and bill me $15.00. That kills me every month because the lab bill of a dermatology visit is usually around $300.00. I am tired of the doctors jacking up lab prices to what ever they want. It's bullshite, you get what my insurance pays and that is it.

How do I accomplish this?

If they are in network with your insurance plan they can't balance bill you, if they are out of network with your insurance plan they will balance bill you. Really nothing you can do about it. And I honestly seriously doubt they care about your letter unless it's a local doctor not associated with a major hospital.

Choose different providers. Some docs are better than others about billing, and seeing a physician at an independent dr's office can be cheaper than going to a clinic wrapped by a hospital (which love to ding you with "facility fees").

Also, reduce the amount of healthcare you are consuming. A monthly dermatology visit? Sheesh. (Apologies if you have some dreadful condition that requires monitoring.)

My opinion is that your letter will have zero impact, and your time is better spent elsewhere.

If an in network provider balance bills you, call your insurance provider. They will send a cease and desist letter and warn the provider they will either be removed from the network (violation of contract) or prosecuted (fraud) if they continue to do it.

Don’t go out of network and you won’t be balance billed. Watch out for providers who use third party billers. Sometimes, the provider doesn’t realize the biller is sending additional bills.

No need to send the letter to your providers. It’ll just piss them off.
