Going from a salary to full commission in sales

I’m getting ready to transition from salary to commission. Luckily, I have a customer base that should allow me to bring home more than what my salary has been.
For those who have made this transition, how does it usually happen? Do they rip the bandaid off immediately or wean you off? If they rip it off, did you get one last “monthly” check as “kickstart”? Im not worried about the transition except for just never being on commission. Really just curious how most companies handle it.
TIA

Mine just started from day one. If you’re not already put a plan in place to keep track of all of your sales figures. It’s more important now than ever to closely track month to month $$ from previous years to be aware of potentially light checks that could upset budgets. Good luck it’s the only way to fly.

How do you like being full commission?

I've begged to be full commission since about a month into my position. Even said I would pay my own expenses. Boss hasn't bit yet. If you're in a business that does a high volume of sales it's a no brainier.

Is the transition your choice or the higher up's choice? What type of products/industry are you in? Are you currently 100% salary or salary + commission?
Personally I would never go back to a 100% commission job unless I had to. A base + commission shows much more commitment to the position from the employer and allows for a much more comfortable sales cycle in the inevitable slow periods. The very high paying sales fields all have generous base salaries with large OTE's. As an example, medical device sales are often $80-120k base salary with a similar figure possible in commission bringing you to a total of $150-200k+ in a year. There are many industries like this: SaaS, Medical, Construction (certain fields), Financial.

I've seen a few different industries where the company tries to stiff the sales reps by switching them to commission. I just heard about one dude over lunch being asked to go to commission. He deals on the government tax software side of our business and all of the taxes are collected in January and February. After that he makes crap for salary. And they want to roll his accounts off after 2 years. Of course they don't structure his salary to where he could potentially make more.
Never understood why companies try to screw over a sales rep that is easily pulling in substantially more than their salary.
Private equity firms are the worst.

Higher ups. This was told to me in my interview.

I sell products that everyone uses daily.

100% salary but will turn into 100% commission.

100% commission is the norm in retail, so there is nothing abnormal about that. Typically in retail you will have a few months of salary to get your bearings straight, then they rip off the bandaid and go straight commission. Once you get out of retail and go B2B you will start seeing more base + commission payplans.

King I like it. I’m way into this industry and can mostly monitor my accounts at this point in my career . One thing I forgot to mention. Make sure all of your customers will bring the same % rate. Some companies discount pricing to large customers and that affects your part of the sale. Also hopefully the words “ House Accounts” never enters in to any conversation . Commission is for those who strive to accheive their highest potential. Anyway you look at it Salaried employees will never be held as accountable as someone who only gets paid on what they create.

I work on salary plus a percentage of the profit. I set my own selling prices so it’s the best of both worlds
