Short summary - my wife works from home about 50% of the time. Her small-ish company is about to be bought out by a larger one. She's been assured she'll have a job after the transition, but not guaranteed she can still work from home. She's not interested in working for a large company, especially the one that is doing the buy out. So she's started the search process for a new position. Problem is, she's gotten spoiled with working from home and the flexibility it provides with our 2 kids. We're both lost on how to approach a new opportunity and asking about working from home, or even finding a work from home job. Any tips? She's talked to a couple of recruiters that haven't been much help. The buyout and transition isn't supposed to commence until late December so she has a little bit of time.

She's in the medical field on the administration side for whatever that is worth.

My mom is a registered nurse working for Blue Cross doing medicare/medicaid stuff from home. She only has to go in the office for 3-4 hrs a week.

I also have a buddy that does IT and works from home a lot more than he goes into the office.

This is a pretty broad field. Does she have any experience coding or auditing? Those are two jobs in healthcare that have a lot of options of working from home. I'm on the IS side of healthcare, and there are tons of options there too (it's a little more specialized and harder to get into though).

No, she's not in coding. I mentioned to her she could likely find something in coding working from home, but she has little experience in it, and she's concerned it wouldn't be as flexible* with her time. It'd also likely be a significant pay cut. Her position is more in management, but it's kind of a niche position for this practice so hard to segment.

*Flexible in this case is her being able to come and go when she works from home to kids' school for stuff, getting them to practices, events after school, helping them with homework after school, etc. When she works from home now, she starts around 7, and busts arse until a little after lunch so she can pay most of her attention to the kids. She'd like to find that in a new position.

If it's as niche as you say, she should look into "consulting" where she can do something similar for a like business but at double the rate.

Sounds like she should also consider part time positions, which would offer the schedule she prefers.

Maybe. I'll say she averages probably 40-50 hours of work per week, so she's earned that flexibility. We've accepted she'll likely be looking at a pay cut, but we're both willing to do that for her to be home more in the afternoons. We just don't know where to start to find the right position. Seems a lot of work from home jobs are offered to those already in house and aren't direct-to-hire, but maybe I'm wrong.

She's also not tied to the medical field. Her degree is actually in finance and worked in banking for several years before taking this position. She's not really interested in going back into banking though. She was in management/compliance there.

Is she managing employees, the practice, or what? As row said, she might want to look into consulting.

Kind of all the above, but also a lot more, which is why she's able to work from home. Technically her boss manages the practice, but does so from a different office. Like I said, it's a weird arrangement and I'm not even 100% sure on all the details. If I had to segment it, it'd be more HR than anything.

She’s going to have a hard time finding a work from home job that pays anywhere close to what she makes currently most likely. Work from home can pay a lot less if it’s advertized as that because so many women prefer the flexibility.

If you don’t know the details of the buyout, I’d probably save some money up and wait it out. Be very patient and obviously look for some great opportunities.

But there’s a difference between being hired for a regular office position and then being able to later work from home, to finding a job that straight up starts working from home. It’s also not exactly a good thing to push in an interview especially as a mother as it shows your priority is staying home over completing the job imo.

Yeah, that's definitely my impression. We're financially prepared for her to not work, or work part time for a few months should she need to. We could even make it work for her to not work at all, but we'd obviously give up some things we enjoy. She only works from home 2 days a week right now, on average, and would be fine with that same arrangement. We'll see. She has an appointment with another recruiter later this week.

Haven’t read thru the whole thread but I work in medical field as well. Have her update LinkedIn profile, best way to get exposure to recruiters. I’ve also used MedReps.com in the past, it’s a job board but more sales related. My other suggestion would be on the vendor side if she works with any software or other type of vendor and knows their products as a user. Those folks are always looking for clinical type roles that were maybe former users of their product that can help with implementations and stuff. It’s remote work but would invlove travel depending on the role.

Could she start her own business in her field?

If she has experience with medical records and MPI databases, patient intake, that sort of thing, I can refer to you a WFH company that does that, based in Atlanta.

We do IT consulting and auditing, for a variety of banks, non-profits, health care orgs, etc. I worked for the company as an IS auditor (among other things) for about 5 years, left because I got burnt out, then recently got hired back on by my old team after they merged with a larger CPA firm. While I used to travel 2 days a week or so, I'm completely remote now, outside of somewhat quarterly trips to ATL or something. Does she have any certifications or anything? Depending on her skill set and resume, we may have some availability.
