Filing taxes on your own VS using a CPA
I'm considering trying it on my own this year. How difficult is it? What's the best program to use? I'm an absolute idiot when it comes to this type of thing.

How much does it cost? I've used a friend the past few years but they moved.

Why don't you at least try to do it yourself. You might surprise yourself! If you have a basic return you don't even need software but there is FREE software out there to complete a basic return.

We have a rental property and another complicated matter and I have been using HR Block software.

My accountant charges me $125 , I have friends who have theirs done by someone else and pay $400... I don't know why but that's their problem not mine.

If a person only has income reported on W2s and a home mortgage, it takes like 10 minutes with a paper 1040 form and a pencil.

I did it myself for decades but got sick of it. Now I drop the papers with a CPA and get it done for $200. Well worth it to not have to dread it and then waste a morning on it,

Turbo tax and other software is perfectly good for most people. A CPA might help you with planning for next year though.

if you have nothing out of the ordinary it is a piece of cake- turbotax online

If you are self employed or have a bunch of deductions, or kids in college, etc. Then get some help

Most places like Jackson Hewitt , HR Block have people with little knowledge about taxes, their training is how to use software that does all the work

Plus they are expensive AF. Most CPA's I know charge less than H&R Block.

I have used Turbo Tax for years and it is fairly easy to use. It usually cost ~ $40 to $80, or so, depending on which version you get. And that depends on how complicated your situation is.
Than if you use it next year it copies this year info into that program.
The free online version is probably the most basic but you could look at that before you buy one for your pc. I have not used the online one but assume it would function similar to the pc version.
