My neighborhood had a pretty bad hail storm back in May. I had a roofer come out and review it, who advised that I put a claim in. My insurance company sent an adjuster who found several "small" hail damage spots (per his chalk circles and his discussion with me afterwards), but wrote the report to say that there was no signs of hail damage.

I forwarded my claim to my agent to dispute the report. They had me get a roofers estimate with pictures, which I provided. I spoke to the new adjuster last week, who said he disagreed with the pictures and the roofers estimate and declined sending out someone else to inspect the roof.

I have since sent it back to my agent and requested another inspection of my roof, but with my roofer present. Now, I have had two roofers tell me I have hail damage, but I don't know shite about roofs and if they are just telling me that so that they can repair it. What I do know is 4 of the surrounding houses to me have all been paid out on hail damage claims and already have new roofs. From what I understand, they look at surrounding roofs and soft metal for damage (which I have pictures of several vents dinged up).

Wondering if anyone has fought something similar and how you worked through it. I am trying to avoid legal action and hopefully can resolve this with my agent.

I hired a public adjuster. He then negotiated a settlement with the insurance company. He was paid out of the settlement. It’s an ugly process but sometimes you have to play hardball.

Oh, I know. I called them about sending an adjustor to come look at the suspected hail damage on my roof and the lady I spoke with said that if they did that, they may raise my premiums, regardless of whether or not there was any hail damage.

There is also a time component.

I also had a roofer assess my roof for hail damage recently. The insurance adjuster agreed that there was widespread hail damage, used hail maps to validate the date of the event and the location. He also advised that the standard time frame for having insurance pay a claim either had passed or would soon pass. He let me know I had the right to request a 180 day extension. I made the request and it was granted, giving me until November to have the work completed.

It also sounds like you have another scheduled roof assessment where the adjuster and roofer will assess it together. I had that happen with a previous home I owned and it worked perfectly. The adjuster who previously rejected the claim suddenly agreed that insurance should pay. Something shady might have happened between the two, because that roofer was not a well established roofer - his guy knocked on our door to say he could get our insurance company to pay for a new roof if we were interested. It worked.

You either have State Farm or All State. Worst insurance companies to deal with. We normally shake the hands of clients with them, say good luck, and move on to the next client. Sucks but it’s normally a large waste of our time with them.

How do you hire a public adjuster? I assume they would be more likely to write the damages if they are paid out of them, correct?

Can you share a few photos? Hail damage on a architectural shingle roof is recognizable.

How old is your roof?

How old are the current shingles on your roof, please show the damage to the soft metal. Normally in South Louisiana, hail needs to be about 1" in diameter to cause damage to laminate shingles under 12 years of age. The soft metal will be damaged prior to the shingles.

My roof is 15 years old and has some wear on it. That is where State Farm is saying it is just an old roof, no hail damage.

I hear you man, I wish I had some bullet proof method to fight these suns a bishes... I have two leaking dormers and 3 roofer that tell me I need a new roof and an adjuster that wants to give me $1,200 instead of the $20k it's going to take to fix it. I have 2 quotes from the roofers and a 3rd that just no-bid because he's too busy, but gave me a letter recommending total replacement, they won't even send out an adjuster to do a second inspection because the first guy didn't know what he was doing.

I have State Farm too. Have been the cheapest, slimiest, worst insurance company I have ever dealt with. Have had them for 20 years on multiple homes.

Hammered by hail last April. Damage to my truck was 3k short. Still fighting over my house. I finally asked them to send out the guy who will do the work at the repair price they are giving me because I can’t find anyone who will do it at their estimated price. Every person in my neighborhood with SF is having the same issue. Awful.

That is a heavier metal furnace cap, the dents in that cap plus the age of the roof mean the there is a really good odds that the roof was damaged by hail. A PA will cost you 10% of the claim, but might be worth the call since they are denying the claim. On the initial inspection was the adjuster present with the roofer?

I’m no roofer but they aren’t wrong here. Your roof isn’t that bad outside of its age.

They aren't wrong that the roof is old, but that doesn't change the fact it has hail damage. I did not have my roofer there when the first guy did the adjustment.
