Which do you prefer:

Higher prices + no shipping fees
or
Lower prices + shipping fees

Find there's mixed feelings on whether to prefer shipping fees or not. Of course based on how much the product is. Most retailers charge a shipping fee and some will actually offer free shipping if a customer buys more than X amount.

Just curious about thoughts from sellers/buyers (Etsy or not) about shipping fees.

Not a big Etsy buyer, but a heavy buyer on eBay...."free" shipping is great, but reasonable shipping charges do not deter me from buying. Note that I said reasonable: I'm mostly buying clothing, and I prefer to see shipping charges that are appropriate to the item purchased. IE, if it's a t-shirt, don't charge me $9.95 to ship. (Some vendors do a flat rate for all items regardless of the true cost to ship.)

Lowest total price

If there’s no alternative, free shipping is always better. It’s similar to a “hidden fee” that no one likes to see show up at the end. Flat shipping fee is next best, and variable based on Zip Code is worst.

agree with others re arbitrary shipping fee. i don't mind it, but don't charge me for your time to package an item that you are selling me. that's my biggest grip with eBay. seems like everyone either selling with $10+ shipping, or price is way too high with free shipping.

i have bought small items from etsy with $5 shipping, and it never bothered me.

Right now i have a flat, same rate shipping fee for my products (handcrafted beaded bracelets: Embody'd Art on Etsy and facebook if you'd like to check it out) and noticed a difference in return compared to how much im selling it for.

Didn't realize how much shipping would cut into your profit until earlier this month. This is still a learning experience for me so I'm testing out multiple ways based on my customers and what they like to see or prefer.

I've found that running deals such as "Buy 3 or more and receive free shipping" helps. I've noticed someone else do something such as "fill out this survey and receive free shipping.

I would do this often if this were an option at different websites.

how are you shipping them? i'm somewhat ignorant on shipping costs, but i'd imagine something in the ballpark of $5 would cover basic USPS shipping for something that small. maybe offer faster shipping for a higher rate?

Bumpity bump.

I have 2 shops on Etsy that are killing it. We offer a flat $4.50 on shipping, and no one seems to balk at that rate. About 80% of our orders ship First Class. Most of the orders that are over 1 lb will ship in a large flat rate envelope or in a padded flat rate envelope, so my shipping loss is small when I do have one.

My products are all about 70% gross margin. I rely heavily on Etsy's sales discount feature, and I generally have items on sale for 10% off. Etsy shoppers will search for sales, so you can really increase your visibility when you offer a sale. The customers seem to love that the discount generally offsets the shipping price.

We did 13,000 orders in 2017 which is about 36 per day. So far, sales are WAY up in 2018. If people have any qualms over $4.50 shipping, it isn't showing.

The only thing I care about is competitive pricing after shipping. But people are weird, I'd try both methods to see which works. Sometimes small things like free shipping gets people.

I'll also say, it pisses me off when people over charge for shipping. For instance, I just bought something and paid $10 for shipping and it was $4.50 through UPS. Sure the box and what not are a little extra, but its not $10. As a small businessman it pisses me off when others nickle and dime me like that. I don't mind paying for the actual shipping as that cost truly varies. But charging me for your shipping box, packaging, and time when you literally only do online sales hacks me off.
