Employers Asking for College Transcripts
Posted on 6/19/17 at 4:30 pm

I recently applied for a job online and you had to put your college GPA down. Considering I couldn't find my college transcripts (I transferred three times before getting my BS) and I graduated 12 years ago, I just "ballparked" it (put down a cumulative GPA of 3.4 from the college I graduated from).
Well I ended up finding undergrad transcript today while cleaning out some old boxes, and my cumulative GPA was actually 3.24.
Is that going to be that big of a deal if I land an interview? If I end up getting the job, will they ask for my college transcript? It's a large, global company so I don't know how much of a background check they do on potential employees. I currently work for a large, global company and I can't remember if I had to supply them with a transcript when I was hired 6 years ago.
Has anyone had an employer ask for their college transcripts?

I would be very surprised (shocked) if they asked for a transcript and even then 3.4 compared to 3.24 isn't a huge deal.
GPA is really only considered when you are actively looking for jobs while in school or literally fresh out.

Mine asked but I just ignored the request. Got my name on the door now so surely they won't fire me if they find out my "somewhere around a 3.0" was really 2.5.

Ya, you have to be in a real specific field for it to matter down the road.
Big Law asks for your GPA if you're a lateral hire and won't hire you unless you meet their minimum GPAs.
I imagine that goes out the window if you bring clients with you though, but then you're partner level anyways so I bet none of that applies then.

It can be a big deal if you ever apply for a security clearance.
No, there isn't a big difference between 3.4 and 3.24 but the fact that a difference exists at all can matter.
That said, especially for your first job there are lots of places that simply don't check.

Should I go back into the online job application and change the GPA, or would that look suspicious (I can still edit that)?
I read this company does "extensive background checks" and I don't really know what that entails. Would an extensive background check show my GPA? I figure the only thing they could find would be my degrees.

Your grades are protected like your health information is. I'm not going to tell you what to do, but I do know this is true

I'd toss your application in the trash the second I figured out you exaggerated. You're either a liar or so carelessly non-detail oriented, it would be a deal breaker for me if I was hiring.
But most people won't care.

Worked for several fortune 500 companies, none ever asked for verification that I went to college or what my gpa was. A company doing a background check could not get your gpa or transcripts unless you released it to them first. I also did some university teaching at several schools, they all wanted transcripts, and apparently went over them with a microscope based on the stupid questions they asked about courses I took..

I'd disqualify you from the job process if I found out. Just go edit the application.

I only had one employer actually request transcript from college and I was only 3 years out. I had lied on application and didn't get job

All of the professional jobs I've had have asked for a transcript to be electronically sent.
I actually also worked a side job on weekends that did not require a degree (while I was in grad school). I listed my degree to make sure I had the upper edge, and sure enough, they then held up my job offer waiting on a transcript. Go figure. But I did get the job.

I never understood that about law firms. I was looking to make a move after about 7 years of experience in T&E when one firm asked for my transcripts. Really? My crim law and con law grades are a good indicator for how well I can advise a client in an estate administration?

my first "real job" didn't ask for transcripts. i don't think they even asked for a GPA, but i did put it on my resume

Just be honest like you were here if they even ask. It's the truth, after all

In the CPA field, it's common to have to provide transcripts for your first job, and they also care about your GPA.
Once you get your CPA license, no one will ever ask for your GPA or transcript again.
Or let me say this. If anyone asked me for it, I'd run for the hills as it must be a super douchy place to work.

Sounds like you are going to need to sign up for some classes now to get your GPA up to 3.4

Many govt jobs or contractors require proof of degree. USAJobs requires full transcripts to apply for most positions. My last two employers - both on govt contracts required either a copy of transcripts or copy of diploma on start date.

I wouldn't. But if it proceeds, said you reviewed it and noticed that you entered 3.4. and you meant to enter 3.24.
I doubt anyone would check that.

I know a guy that got a promotion to a 6 figure job with company vehicle and the works in the bag until they requested the transcripts. Problem was he didn't have a degree. Clerk at a parts store now.
